Recovering Deleted Folder from USB

CrazyJoeCrazyJoe Winter Springs, FL Icrontian

I accidently deleted a folder off my School USB and need to recover the files in there. I've done some Google-fu but most of the programs that I've found have a data limit recovered and then you have to pay to get more than that amount. Does anyone have any suggestions of good programs/utilities to use to recover these things? I had the drive plugged into a PC at another school I was at today so the files themselves never hit the physical PC to check the recycle bin, they're lost in the ether or network or something like that equally unaccessable. Thanks in advance!

    Recuva - https://www.piriform.com/recuva

Works really well and is pretty straightforward and easy.

I tried Recuva first and it didn't find anything at all about the folder that was deleted. It doesn't even see the folder, or any of the files in it.

I haven't used it myself, but the linux-y internet recommends Photorec. Free download, no limits, plenty of users, some of which have reported successful recovery of USB files. Probably doesn't recover folder structure, but should be able to grab files, especially if they have well-known headers.

May not be the easiest to use. Good luck!

Recuva didn't show anything for the drive with deep scan enabled? Photorec is also possible and will very likely find it but far less user-friendly.

You should also confirm that you deleted stuff and didn't add anything new to the drive.

  • Recuva always seems to work better on magnetic drives. I have had some trouble with flash storage. There is a paid program that will let you preview for free prior to paying, I need to go home and see what that tool is called but I have used it with flash drives sucessfully. I will let you know later what it is called, if I remember it is simply called "card recovery"?

    +1 for Photorec.

This is it, so no risk to see if that scan works, you just have to pay to do the actual recovery if it does manage to locate the files. I've had some fortune with this tool for flash memory. For all my magnetic drive scans free Recuva works great but for some unknown reason to me it does not recover as well on flash media. Try card recovery.

  • Another +1 for Photorec. Have used to recover files from failing flash media multiple times.
