The Art of Deception

Hello there,

I know this book came out a little while ago and I was wondering if anyone out there had read it also. To anyone who does not know about the book, it is written by Kevin Mitnick (most wanted cracker of all time) and has a foreword by The Woz.

I've gotten about half-way through it and I can't help but laugh sometimes. The fact that some of these people will just give up there password amazes me even if it is to someone "important." There isn't a soul in the world who knows my passwords to anything, and if I am lazy and tell them one time, I immediately change it within a day of giving up the information, to make sure they don't touch any of my files later.

Is there anyone out there who feels they have been the victim of social engineering (it's okay, we won't judge).

I don't feel this book will get the credit it deserves by companies for one reason or another, which is a shame. The book is very well written though, and does address what a lot of people, including myself, have not thought of as harmful. How do you guys feel about this book. Is it actually informative or is it just giving people ideas? Also do you feel the book will have much of an impact on how companies address social engineering as a threat, and how they train their employees. All feedback welcome.

Thanks,
Alex

P.S. If you have the book, what is your favorite story, mine is the One Cent Phone.

I bought the book in hardcover like a week before the softcover came out so I paid like $30 for it, so that kinda sucks.

It's a good book, but I think it's way too hyped because it's written by Kevin Mitnick. I mean, it's a good read, but I don't think it's infinitely greater than any other security book I've read, had some good stories and stuff but like I said I thought it was very over hyped for the contents. There's another book he's coming out with called like the art of intrusion or something like that.

I do agree it was a little over-hyped because of the auther, but because it comes from a person who was very successful at what he did, and that was Social Engineering. So for him to talk about Social Engineering seems a little more credible than some guy saying watch out for this without any actual first hand knowledge. But still, a little over-hyped.

The Art of Intrusion is actually the book I'm more anxious about. Stories about real crackers who and then Mitnick explains why it worked, that's just cool.

Thanks for the reply,
Alex
