I got inked!

So I got my first tattoo tonight. Exciting stuff. Nothing crazy, of course. Just fairly standard First Ink fare.

I'm having a little trouble reading it - what does it say and what does it mean?

Looks good. Is this in celebration of not dying of salmonella? Appropriate that shwaip was the first to post...

Ink Jet!

When I first read the title to this thread, I pictured someone holding a small squid and getting shot in the face with its ink jet.

It says 'avidyā' which is the English spelling of the Sanskrit word for fundamental ignorance. It is perhaps the most important Buddhist concept; that we are all fundamentally ignorant and that only by embracing that ignorance can we know wisdom.

The left arm will be the Sanskrit spelling of 'prajñā'. As one might imagine, prajñā loosely translates to 'wisdom' and 'enlightenment' in English, although as a concept both of these Sanskrit words are defined as being too profound to be reduced to a single linguistic construct to be commonly communicated. In this manner, these words represent a general idea more than a strict definition. They represent the extremes of knowing and not knowing in the same way that infinity represents the extreme of our numerical system; an abstract idea that can only be defined by other abstract ideas.

Also, thanks for the compliments. I'm quite pleased with how this first bit turned out. The accompanying sleeves will definitely tie it all together. The artist who did the work, Albie, is well respected on the east coast for his abstract art. Obviously this particular piece is simple stencil work, but he has some random stuff posted to his blog if anybody is interested.

Definitely not. After I got the tattoo I learned that the inner wrist is one of the most painful non-genital places to get tattooed. I will say that right over the wrist was a little uncomfortable, but not really painful. The upper arm was actually a pleasant sensation. I enjoyed the experience.

I really like this. I am considering a (sort of ) similar tattoo on the insides of my arms.

Mine would say "scio nescio" which is *roughly* "i know [that] i know nothing" in latin. a more correct translation would be a little more awkward ... so im happy with the look and balance of "scio nescio" ... fonts and placement are things i still struggle with, but i have wanted ink for YEARS.

Scio nescio, I like. Philosophically, very similar.

I understand where you're coming from on the placement, style, etc. I have been drawing and planning my 'body art', if you will, since I was a young teenager. I'm twenty-four now. It took me a while to arrive at just what exactly was powerful enough and meaningful enough to me to permanently etch it in my hide and display it to the world.

The font choice was actually fairly easy. At first I was thinking something very fluid at a glance -- in other words, no block lettering or background scroll work. The root of the word is in ancient Indo-Asian linguistics, so something fluid would be appropriate to that style of writing and the alphabets of those languages.

Then I realized that this is ignorance we're talking about here, and ignorance is bold... It is bold, and complicated, and it ensnares the mind and spirit. After that realization, the font choice became rather easy.

To me, the text is bold and plain to represent the stark nature of ignorance -- the black and white sheen that it casts on our perception of reality, if you will -- and the scroll work is intricate and difficult to follow because so too is the path away from ignorance.

I am planning on getting a lower sleeve to compliment the text. The exact content of the sleeve is still in the planning stages, but I've been thinking of surrounding the text with a prison wall styled after a white picket fence. The artwork would be an odd mix of idyllic themes with subtle signs of decay. Essentially the American Dream as seen through the rose-colored prism of ignorance.

My left arm, prajna, will be dedicated to the cold realities of this world, along with the natural beauty of life as seen without the lens of ignorance -- for just as ignorance shields us from much pain, so too does it shield us from much beauty.
