Talking Silly canadians, eh?

Got back from my vacation. My family and I went up to Canada for a couple weeks. We stayed in Ottawa for a couple days, and then went to the Rideau Canal, where we spent the bulk of our trip. We rented a house-boat, and went thru the locks. On our last night, lightning struck a tree about 50ft away. It was the highlight of our trip All in all, a pretty good week and a half.

....Anyways, to get this back on topic... How aboot those canadians, eh? I always thought that the aboot/eh thing was just a joke, but after spending a week and a half there, i know it's not . I heard a whole lot about how nice the "boot" that we rented was

Oh it is deffinitly no joke. I have lived across the river from Canada my whole life and have alway heard the dialect of Canadian English. Did you notice the way they pronounce process, like proo-cess, and ass is arse (my personal favorite.) Even today I still am thrown off alittle when I hear it, I sit there and think 'well, what is that all aboot. That is qutie odd, eh.'

Well, I've been Canadian my whole life, eh, but I don't know about the "aboot." Out west here it is not that prevelant. It is much more noticeable out east, where the maritime provinces have more influence on the dialect.

But if you want to talk about funny accents and dialects, geez man, take a trip across the US. From the New Yawkers who can't seem to make a on "OH" sound, only "AW" sounds; to the Bostonian's with their "we don't want to be British but we like to sound like we all went to Oxford" attempt at high-dialect; to the Floridians who may not talk so funny, but boy do they like to speak GREGIAROUSLY LOUD"; the Southerners with their drawls and y'alls; and the Midwesterners with their twangs and dangs. And lets not forget the Californian Valley-speak, not so much in vogue these days, but certainly, like, a major contributor to the Young American English vocab, you know? And the grunge-speak of the Pacific Northwest, that funny skateboarding and caffeine influenced dialect of angst and morbidity sprang up in the 80's and still leaves it's mark today.

And how about the Ebonics and Hispanic influenced gangsta-talk. I'd axe you to explain that schizzle, but some nizzle might perpetrate a cap in my ass fo dissin his homeys.

And then, there is the new language of Americuh - Bushisms. Millions of Americuhns are dislearing their vocabularyisms thanks to his recommitmentness to securityness from nukulur terrosticism actvityness.

Oh well, at least he can sort of speak your Official Language...not like our Prime Minister, who makes sense in neither official language!

Cheers, eh.

HAHAHAHAH. Couldn't have said it any better!!

People will find that the eastern regions of Canada (Quebec, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Newfounland & Labrador) generally have an accent different compared to the rest of the nation. You'll find that the "eh's" and "aboot's" are more prevalent out there.

Come on down to Ottawa or T.O and you'll see that there are plenty of people who can speak english fine.

For anyone who wants a challenge, try understanding Montreal cab-drivers: it's like a whole other language. Not quite english. Not quite french!

I noticed he carefully left out Michigan/North Ohio/Indiana English which is consequently ranked as one of the most accurate and clearly understandable dialects of English in the world.

That is because my wife was standing right behind me while I was typing. She was born in Ohio, and grew up in Michigan. Her parents are from Indiana. I didn't want to risk offending the love of my life, especially when she woke up with a headache this morning. I don't want to make her angry!

But, having spent a lot of time around her folks, I must say they are very clear in most of their speech, except for the occasional term like "warsh" instead of wash, and "ruf" instead of roof.

Now my brother, man, he married a Newfie girl a coupe of years ago. I was the best man at his wedding, back in my home town, which he still lives in. After the ceremony and pictures, we had 2 hours to kill before the reception. All of her family ended up back at my brother and now sister-in-law's place. Normally, I would have drove 5 mins up the road to my parents house to be with my relatives, but as part of the wedding party, I felt obligated to stay with the bride and groom. So, there I was in a living room with about 20 Newfies who were having 44 different conversations in 18 different directions at 240 word per minute! I was like

I had to just quietly slip out for some fresh air. My brother noticed and slipped out a few minutes later to laugh at me. He had been around Newfs for 2 years by then, he was used to it. I had been around my sure of Newfs, but never that many in one place at one time! Nicest folks in the world, without question, but you just can't understand half of what they are saying, even though you are supposedly speaking the same language

Ohio Accent

Both of my parents, myself, and both sisters were born in Ohio. My mom has almost no noticable accent, with the exception that "Beagle" and "Eagle" rhyme with "Iggle".

My dad was born and raised in southeastern Ohio, near the West Virginia border. It would take me hours to cover everything in his accent, but the most noticable is that often the "ch" and "sh" sounds are reversed. He picks up a pound of hamburger at the "busher chop".

I've lived in Virginia since I was about 5 years old, and have had numerous people comment on my "southern" accent. I never noticed it until people started pointing it out. I have also been told that my southern accent disappears when I'm drunk. (I don't hardly drink anymore).

LOL shorty

I miss my Californian dialect. I'm from around Sacremento, and we didn't really have the valley talk thing going on there. But now I've got a bit of a drawl. I cringe every time I catch myself saying "Ya'll." Ick! I fought off the accent for awhile, but after 11 years it's time I just gave in.

But Oklahoma isn't as bad as Texas, which in turn isn't nearly as bad as the real south. (which refers to the southeastern states, excluding Florida, for those of you across the pond )

Well, I've lived half of my life in North Eastern NY (near Buffalo) and haven't noticed any change in dialect since moving to Farmington (just outside of Detroit).

I believe it's the big cities that have the accents. I know a few people who have lived their whole lives in Detroit, and they all speak with a slightly southern-ish accent.

But in the end, there is no "real" or "correct" English, or way to pronounce it. Anyone used to one dialect would consider the other dialect "wrong". It's just the way the world works.

Well shorty, that all depends now doesn't it? I mean there are certain dialects of English... umm... English... that just shred all the rules behind the language *cough*Liverpool*cough*

The only people who can speak english correctly are California natives.

However, Canadian english is pretty funny, eh?

Hahahaha Necropolis, and my Stoke accent isn't a million miles away from yours either.

Do you notice nobody has yet mentioned speaking 'American'?

Shorty is quite right in saying that the English speak English the best.

Tut, you American types, always besmirching our good name and language!

The only places in Canada that there are stereotypical accents are:

1) Quebec..(French Canadian)
2) East Coast ...the "aboot" thing.

Those are where you do hear the "funny Canadian accents" but where I am on the west coast and in fact pretty well from Ontario west there are no accents. We call it a "brown" accent....no funny sayings, no "eh", no regional slang.

You'd be hard pressed to find someone in my neck of the woods saying "aboot" unless they were visiting from the East Coast.

A friend of mine from Dallas gave me a valuable piece of information that I have hung onto for a decade. When I called him in Dallas one day he said "Accents depend on which part of the world you are standing in...down here (in Dallas) y'all got the accent friend."

Now Shorty is another story. I have to get my English to English dictionary out for him. Prime and I can understand each other perfectly...we both have no accent and he's pretty well on the opposite of the continent from me. When we talk to Shorty...whoa....

LOL

I've pretty much given up trying to talk to the relatives I have in Liverpool over the phone... asking them to repeat everything 3 or 4 times so I can figure out more-or-less what the general idea of what they're saying is gets old pretty fast

Shorty...
Oi!
See? See?! I mean dictionary.com doesn't even have "Oi". If you were using correct English, you'd say "Hey!" not "Oi"

That and "answerphone". That would be an answering machine. Say it with me... a-n-s-w-e-r-i-n-g m-a-c-h-i-n-e.

Nixxer... yea, except we can turn the BBC off.

Mediaman... occasionally the U.S. TV stations will have Canadians on for one reason or another. Even those of you that don't have the stereotypical accents have accents... they're just very subtle. Like this guy on the Discovery channel the other day. I was watching this program, and I kept trying to figure out why this guy sounded "funny"... he wasn't really mispronouncing anything or anything... he just sounded... different. Then I realized he was Canadian. That explained everything.

The English may have invented it, but the Californians perfected it.

Note that I'm not trying to insult anyone. I just enjoy being a smart@ss

I've spoken with Shorty on the phone, and I can understand him easily. That is of course due to the fact that I can imitate his accent perfectly.

Besides, all of you get off your high horses. Southeast michigan was rated as the most clearly-spoken and historically-accurate English in the world by none other than the individuals who write and revise the Oxford English Dictionary.

Somehow, that actually doesn't surprise me. I haven't been to Michigan, but Illinois is relatively close, and I've been to Chicago. They have no accent. I swear, I travel 2191.8 miles (Yahoo maps ) across the country, and these people have no accent. Come to think of it, neither does my Dad's family, and they're from Nebraska...

I get about 3/4 of it and guess at the rest

For some reason, I knew MM doesn't have a "canadian accent." Just wouldn't fit.
