Quoting LawnMM
They always say that about the winners. I remember a commercial lance did last year when that started flying around. He's riding his bike in the pouring rain as he narrates the commercial. Something along the lines of "I train hard and I win. People ask me what I'm on...what am I on? I'm on my bike 16 hours a day busting my ass. What are you on?"
That was a great commercial, LMM...
What the common lay person doesn't realize about cycling is that these guys are tested constantly.... It's not like the NFL or many of the other sports where random checks are done but only a few are actually tested...
I forget the actual number (and I believe Lance talks about it in his book) but out of 23 days he may get tested a little less than 20% of the time. That is considerably more than most professional atheletes as it relates to one event.
Also keep in mind that we're not just talking steroids, EPO, and many of the other commonly known banned substances. Many a rider has had to abandon the tour because of a wasp sting, bone fracture, cold, allergies, etc... This is typically done because many of the medicines they could take to alleviate these problems are on the "banned list".
I'm not looking to turn this into a doping discussion thread.... I'd be happy to participate in one in another thread though. I'm really more interested in discussing the Tour and having everyone see how truly remarkable these guys are. AND WHAT A GREAT SPORTING EVENT THE Tour de France is!!!!!
