HowTo Install Folding@Home the easy way

I have been fighting Ubuntu to install it every time something crashes Ubuntu. Right now I have Version 18.04-4, and I had to stumble across a program called Gdebi to help. It is in the Ubuuntu software index. I had to install it, then point it at the deb archive I wanted installed. In this case I left Fahclient's .deb and Fahcontrol's deb. in Downloads. Gdebi let me navigate to Downloads easily, and then choose what .deb I wanted. Fahclient came first--Gdebi had worked around the problems with fahclient s not popping up its configure window, and left fa

Built new PC, GPU failing to fold

I have been trying to troubleshoot here and there with limited knowledge on either side of things, so I don't have a screenshot of the issue.

Built my new PC, it is running a Radeon 5700XT which should pump out some decent numbers, however on the occasion that I actually get a WU for the GPU it is failing and I am not sure why. Someone suggested the GPU Whitelist, which does include the 5700 XT, so I am out of my depth as to why my GPU is failing to get any WUs or actually complete them.

I have wanted to start an Icrontic Folding@home database for a while, so I am doing it now. For CPU PPD post which processor, clock speed, and which client(single core, SMP, or SMP2). For GPU2 or GPU3 post GPU model, core-shadder(if applicable)-mem speed, and which GPU client.

UPDATE: Going forward we are going to be centralizing our PPD on the FAHControl ppd reporting, this is not a hard rule but a preferred method. If at all possible please run a WU for a slot(CPU/GPU) before considering it a stabilized value.

A very important milestone for the team and sgstair happened earlier in the week. Our second person has accrued 1,000,000,000+ points. This dedicated folder is ranked 249 globally. For the past year @sgstair has put up at least 20 million a month or better.

Returning to Folding@Home in 2016

I saw a Reddit thread that got me re-interested in Folding@Home. It was basically someone asking (back in 2012) if Folding had actually accomplished anything after all these years. The top comment was a scientist who basically said "Unequivocally, YES".

So since I'm at work 8-9 hours a day and sleeping for several hours a day but my PC is always on, I decided to restart.

Team 93 is still active. We're 43rd in the world, and we will be passed by team [A]rab Folders in 4 weeks. I'm gonna help stave that off and hell, maybe even move us back up in the charts

Our community looks very different today than it did 10 years ago when folding was big, but many of us still have supercomputers sitting at our feet and F@H has NEVER been easier to install and configure.

2017 Folding Awards at Expo

Some of you have reached the 100.000.000 point mark which means you get a badge to go along with a shout out on the forums. What some of you may not know is that there are also physical awards that are annually given out at Expo during the closing ceremonies. Due to the time it takes to have the awards made in time for Expo, I have to set a cut off date of May 31st for 2017 recipients. As is stands right now. @Gargoyle is the only one who would be impacted by this (so turn your damned battle station back on or whatever ). You don't have to be present at Expo to get one of these either. If you are unable to attend I will make sure you get your award in the mail.

I cannot get WUs for my CPU on my new Ryzen 7 1800X system.

Folding@Home clustering with Raspberry Pi 3

I've recently begun working with my first Raspberry Pi 3, and I'm planning a new project.

The idea will be to set up an expandable array of Raspberry Pis that will be 100% dedicated to Folding. Each Pi 3 has four cores at 1.2ghz each and 1GB of LPDDR2-900 SDRAM, as well as a VideoCore IV GPU.

Short-term goals:

Build a base/rack for the units, ideally to be hung on a wall.
-- Will include a powered USB hub for distributing power
-- network hub/switch for connectivity
-- room for further expansion
Enable one Raspberry Pi 3 with Folding@Home, maximize single-unit computations, enable remote monitoring.

Once that's done:

Liquid-cooled SoC
Overclock
Add more units
Cluster units with BOINC
100% self-contained solar powered
Upgrade from 32-bit to 64-bit Linux ????

Team Icrontic vs Team Egg Roll - 2017 Folding Update

Our Folding@Home team has had a VERY long-standing rivalry with ArsTechnica.com's Team Egg Roll. It's been going on for 14 years or so. In all that time we've been relatively neck-and-neck in the race to the top of the worldwide folding charts, but Egg Roll has always been a bit larger and a bit more ahead (can't hurt that they're backed by one of the largest and most influential tech sites in America!)

Despite their much larger size, we've always managed to hold our own and now I'm proud to say we're in the home stretch of finally overtaking Team Egg Roll (thanks in no small part to @Leonardo bringing his folding might to bear in our corner). Long-time cheerleaders @_K and @Sonorous should be thanked for keeping the team spirit alive because here it is, 2017, and we're still doing this and we're about to overtake our rivals

My desktop is hella old, and I am looking to upgrade big time next year. I am only estimating something like 35000 points a day at Full Power (my CPU doing a whopping 1605). I think I joined the Team 93 correctly, but I am not sure when I will end up being added to the team's count.
