I realize that WD Red drives are intended for NAS and RAID setups, but are they still useful for standard run-of-the-mill desktop storage? Discuss.
If it matters, I value reliability over speed.
They are not. Reds do not behave well in desktops because the motor is designed for constant running with minimal start-stop cycling. They also have extremely poor random seek performance - well below even 5400RPM drives. You should not EVER use Reds in desktop applications. (Not even RAID configurations. The seek performance is that bad.)
Yeah, sounds about right. From what I've gathered, they're similar to Greens, but are a bit more robust. They called it "intellipower", allowing them to change the spindle's RPM to suit loads.

I did some more research, so will thank @RootWyrm . Looks like WD Blue series is what WD recommends for Desktop use reliable drives.

Thankfully nothing like Greens. You do not want to see the performance of Greens. I would not sell those things to my worst enemy. And Caviar Blue - more like BLECH. Even my Samsung 154UI's lasted longer. But hark, what is one to do, considering that I won't even dignify a certain other brand by so much as NAMING them, I have had such repeated and utter failure from the garbage they claim is 'Enterprise' much less desktop?
Well, there's always the WD Caviar Black at the lovely price of $89 / 1TB. But the real screamer is the Hitachi Global Storage Technology 7K1000.D (they still maintains separate design and manufacturing) at $88. Single platter makes it one of the fastest drives out there to this day.

I have a Green. With Newegg's 15.00 instant rebate, the 500 GB size Blue is 10.00 cheaper than my Green 500 GB drive was.
My 1Tb Green has been fine as my main drive on my home PC for two years now.
I read a ton of reviews before buying it. A lot of nerds were raging at the time because it sometimes slows down the spindle speed. It's still light years faster than the old-school 5400rpm drives that they were trying to avoid. It's faster than my 2Tb Seagate 5900rpm "Greenpower" drive, and way quieter than my Hitachi 7200rpm 1Tb drive.

The Greens are low noise drives. The spindle speed goes faster during seeking and transferring data.
