Having trailed Dell in worldwide PC sales for four years, Hewlett-Packard has surpassed its rival during the third quarter of this year. According to a report from iSuppli, HP now leads the ranking with a global market share of 16.5%, while Dell fell behind with 16.3%.

AMD today offered a first glimpse at a 4-way, quad-core Opteron processor system during its annual analyst conference. As Intel was the first out of the gate with a quad-core processor, AMD will be the first out fo the gate with a native quad-core chip - four processors that are integrated in one piece of silicon.

Apple has today patched up 31 security flaws in various versions of its Mac OS X operating system. Twelve of the 22 patched software components suffer from flaws that could allow for remote code execution. Other fixes deal with vulnerabilities ranging from denial of service attacks to system privilege escalation.

PS3 users have been left scratching their heads over Sony's firmware upgrade for the PS3. According to Gamespot there are a number of bugs which the PS3 has, but Sony's version 1.11 upgrade did not seem to fix any of them.

In plain shipment numbers, Nintendo's Wii can claim to have had the most successful launch week. The manufacturer today said that more than 600,000 consoles were sold in the first eight days after launch, generating sales of more than $190 million.
