NEC Versa E400 Notebook Sound not Working

I have a NEC E400 Notebook and have recently installed Windows XP Professional with service pack 2 and now I cannot seem to get the sound to work.
I have installed the sound drivers from the CD that came with the notebook, the drivers are for an "Avance AC'97 Audio", however when I go to "Sounds and Audio Devices" in Control Panel it still says that I do not have an audio device.
Can somebody plese help me?
