Really slow computer and "access denied"

Hello again folks. I sought help with the hardware guys for this problem but haven't had any luck there and now with my computer running extremely slow I guess I kind of want to "rule out" a virus. The link to that post is http://icrontic.com/forum/showthread.php?t=74987

My entire computer is running really slow now. I recently got my folding console to work so I wonder if that has anything to do with it but there are just a number of things going on from my computer telling me I'm not the administrator (only account on the comp) to the extreme slowness to problems with IE and games closing. I appreciate if you could give HJT a quick look. Hopefully there's nothing to worry about here. Thanks!

Please note that all instructions given are customised for this computer only, the tools used may cause damage if used on a computer with different infections.

If you think you have similar problems, please post a log in the HJT forum and wait for help.

Hello and welcome to the forums

My name is Katana and I will be helping you to remove any infection(s) that you may have.

Please observe these rules while we work:
    1. If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
    2. Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
    3. Please continue to respond until I give you the "All Clear"
(Just because you can't see a problem doesn't mean it isn't there)

If you can do those three things, everything should go smoothly :D

Please Note, your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use.
Be assured, any links I give are safe

    Step 1

Download and Run ComboFix (by sUBs)
Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix:

    Bleeping Computer ComboFix Tutorial

Post the log from ComboFix when you've accomplished that, along with a new HijackThis log.

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own.
This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

    Step 2

    Kaspersky Online Scanner .
Your Antivirus and/or Antispyware may give a warning during the scan. This is perfectly normal
NOTE:- This scan is best done from IE (Internet Explorer)

NOTE:- Vista users should start IE by Start(Vista Orb) >> Internet Explorer >> Right-Click Run As Admin
    Go Here http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/default/kavwebscan.html

Read the Requirements and limitations before you click Accept.
Once the database has downloaded, click My Computer in the left pane
Now go and put the kettle on !
When the scan has completed, click Save Report As...
Enter a name for the file in the Filename: text box and then click the down arrow to the right of Save as type: and select text file (*.txt)
Click Save - by default the file will be saved to your Desktop, but you can change this if you wish.

    **Note**

To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:
    • Close any open programs.
    • Turn off the real-time scanner of all antivirus or antispyware programs while performing the online scan.

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble viewing the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75%. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.

    Step 3

    Installed Programs

Please could you give me a list of the programs that are installed.
    • Start HijackThis
    • Click on the Misc Tools button
    • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.

You will see a list with the programs installed in your computer.
Click on save list button and specify where you would like to save this file.
When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file.
Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad into your next post.

    Step 4

    Logs/Information to Post in Reply
Please post the following logs/Information in your reply
    • ComboFix Log
    • Kaspersky Log
    • Installed Programs List
  • edited October 2008
I tried to install combo fix and do the tutorials it says on that bleeping computer site but when I dragged the windows XP file thingy over the combo fix it never came up with a confirmation saying it was installed. I tried to run combo fix and it came up with a little progress bar and disappeared after that. Nothing ever happened. Am I doing something wrong or? I'll try to reinstall combofix...if that does anything ill post back and let you know, otherwise assume im still stuck here.
  • edited October 2008
    Run ComboFix using these instructions:

Click the Windows 'Start' button > Select 'Run' - then copy/paste the following bolded text into the run box & click OK.

    "%userprofile%\desktop\combofix.exe" /killall

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply.

    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

ok...i am about to run kapersky here so I'll do the combofix right afterwards. THanks for the help.

I am having no luck with combofix. I tried the new way you said too. I tried to uninstall and reinstall, and I tried to not add the windows xp file that they said to. I have the kapersky log and the HJT one but I don't know what to say about combofix...doesn't look like it's gonna work.

    1. Please download FixPolicies.exe by Bill Castner and save it to your desktop.
    2. Double click on FixPolicies.exe to run it.
    3. Click on Install. It will create a folder named FixPolicies on your desktop.
    4. Open the FixPolicies folder.
    5. Double click on Fix_policies.cmd to run it. Command Prompt will open and close quickly; this is normal.

Download and Run ComboFix in safe mode

Please delete the copy of ComboFix that you have and download an updated copy from one of the links below

    ComboFix.exe 1
    ComboFix.exe 2
    ComboFix.exe 3

    Reboot in safe mode
You will now need to reboot in safe mode, you will not have internet access whilst you do the next part
Please copy/paste or print the following instructions.

    To reboot in safe mode
You can boot in Safe Mode by restarting your computer, then continually tapping F5 OR F8 until a menu appears.
Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter.

    • Please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:
      Killall::
      SkipFix::

    • Save this as CFScript.txt and place it on your desktop.

      CFScriptb.gif
    • Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
    • ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
    • When finished, it will produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.

CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

Here's the log...I ran it in safe mode and it shut down and started up in regular mode again. This is fine I'm sure but Comodo started up and put the ki-bosh on whatever it was doing. It prevented whatever combo fix was trying to do and i had to click that it was ok. idk if this had an effect on combofix or not but it did stop and write the log right afterwards. Anyways, here's the log:

There is nothing showing in your logs that would cause any problem now, how are things running ?

    Remove Programs

Now click Start---Control Panel. Double click Add or Remove Programs (XP) / Programs and Features (Vista) . If any of the following programs are listed there,
click on the program to highlight it, and click on remove.
    • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
      Java(TM) SE Development Kit 6

    Now close the Control Panel.
  • edited October 2008
I removed those two programs...things are still really slow though. IE takes about 2 minutes to load but it does run fine once it does load. My computer takes about 6 to 8 minutes to start up. I wasn't convinced I had a virus but I figured I should check it out just incase...I am running out of ideas I think. Do you think folding could have anything to do with it? Thanks for the help!
  • edited October 2008
Folding could be something to do with your problem, especially if the slowdown occured just after you got it working.
The best way to check is to disable it and then reboot and see if that has changed anything.

You can also remove some of the items from auto start...

Download Winpatrol It is an excellent startup manager and then some !!

Install Winpatrol, and when running click on the Startup Programs tab
The following items can safely be disabled.

    [SynTPEnh] C:\Program Files\Synaptics\SynTP\SynTPEnh.exe
    [QPService] "C:\Program Files\HP\QuickPlay\QPService.exe"
    [ISUSPM Startup] "c:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\UpdateService\isuspm.exe" -startup
    [ISUSScheduler] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\UpdateService\issch.exe" -start
    [Cpqset] C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\Default Settings\cpqset.exe
    [GrooveMonitor] "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\GrooveMonitor.exe"
    [x3watch] C:\Program Files\X3watch\x3watch.exe
    [DLA] C:\WINDOWS\System32\DLA\DLACTRLW.EXE
    [hpWirelessAssistant] C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\HP Wireless Assistant\HPWAMain.exe
    [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
    [IgfxTray] C:\WINDOWS\system32\igfxtray.exe
    [HotKeysCmds] C:\WINDOWS\system32\hkcmd.exe
    [Persistence] C:\WINDOWS\system32\igfxpers.exe
    [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
    [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_07\bin\jusched.exe"
    [Aim6] "C:\Program Files\AIM6\aim6.exe" /d locale=en-US ee://aol/imApp
    [ctfmon.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe
    [updateMgr] "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Reader\AdobeUpdateManager.exe" AcRdB7_0_9 -reboot 1

Just click on each item and then click Disable
(if the program is running, Winpatrol will ask if you wish to stop it)

Reboot your computer and see if that has helped the boot time.

As for IE, it could be an addon that is slowing it down.
Try running IE without addons and see if that helps
    • Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools - IE (No Add-Ons)

Congratulations your logs look clean :D

Let's see if I can help you keep it that way

    First lets tidy up :D

    • This will clear your System Volume Information restore points and remove all the infected files that were quarantined
    • Click START then RUN
    • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the /U, it needs to be there.
      • CF_Cleanup.png

You can also delete any logs we have produced, and empty your Recycle bin.

The following is some info to help you stay safe and clean.
( Vista users must ensure that any programs are Vista compatible BEFORE installing )

You may already have some of the following programs, but I include the full list for the benefit of all the other people who will be reading this thread in the future.

    Online Scanners
I would recommend a scan at one or more of the following sites at least once a month.

    http://www.pandasecurity.com/activescan
    http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/71706/kavwebscan.html

!!! Make sure that all your programs are updated !!!
Secunia Software Inspector does all the work for you, .... see HERE for details

    AntiSpyware
    • AntiSpyware is not the same thing as Antivirus.
Different AntiSpyware programs detect different things, so in this case it is recommended that you have more than one.
You should only have one running all the time, the other/s should be used "on demand" on a regular basis.
Most of the programs in this list have a free (for Home Users ) and paid versions,
it is worth paying for one and having "realtime" protection, unless you intend to do a manual scan often.
    • Spybot - Search & Destroy <<< A must have program
      • It includes host protection and registry protection
      • A hosts file is a bit like a phone book, it points to the actual numeric address (i.e. the IP address) from the human friendly name of a website. This feature can be used to block malicious websites
    • MalwareBytes Anti-malware <<< A New and effective program
    • a-squared Free <<< A good "realtime" or "on demand" scanner
    • superantispyware <<< A good "realtime" or "on demand" scanner

    Prevention
    • These programs don't detect malware, they help stop it getting on your machine in the first place.
Each does a different job, so you can have more than one
    • Winpatrol
      • An excellent startup manager and then some !!
      • Notifies you if programs are added to startup
      • Allows delayed startup
      • A must have addition
    • SpywareBlaster 4.0
      • SpywareBlaster sets killbits in the registry to prevent known malicious activex controls from installing themselves on your computer.
    • SpywareGuard 2.2
      • SpywareGuard provides real-time protection against spyware.
      • Not required if you have other "realtime" antispyware or Winpatrol
    • ZonedOut
      • Formerly known as IE-SPYAD, adds a long list of sites and domains associated with known advertisers and marketers to the Restricted sites zone of Internet Explorer.
    • MVPS HOSTS
      • This little program packs a powerful punch as it blocks ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.
      • For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial by WinHelp2002.
      • Not required if you are using other host file protections

    Internet Browsers
    • Microsoft has worked hard to make IE.7 a more secure browser, unfortunately whilst it is still the leading browser of choice it will always be under attack from the bad guys.
Using a different web browser can help stop malware getting on your machine.
      • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
        1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
        2. Click once on the Security tab
        3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
        4. Click once on the Custom Level button.
          • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
          • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
          • Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
          • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
          • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
          • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
          • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
          • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
        5. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

If you are still using IE6 then either update, or get one of the following.

Cleaning Temporary Internet Files and Tracking Cookies
    • Temporary Internet Files are mainly the files that are downloaded when you open a web page.
Unfortunately, if the site you visit is of a dubious nature or has been hacked, they can also be an entry point for malware.
It is a good idea to empty the Temporary Internet Files folder on a regular basis.

Tracking Cookies are files that websites use to monitor which sites you visit and how often.
A lot of Antispyware scanners pick up these tracking cookies and flag them as unwanted.
CAUTION :- If you delete all your cookies you will lose any autologin information for sites that you visit, and will need your passwords

Both of these can be cleaned manually, but a quicker option is to use a program
    • ATF Cleaner
      • Free and very simple to use
    • CCleaner
      • Free and very flexible, you can chose which cookies to keep

Also PLEASE read this article.....So How Did I Get Infected In The First Place

The last and most important thing I can tell you is UPDATE.
If you don't update your security programs (Antivirus, Antispyware even Windows) then you are at risk.
Malware changes on a day to day basis. You should update every week at the very least.

If you follow this advice then (with a bit of luck) you will never have to hear from me again :D

If you could post back one more time to let me know everything is OK, then I can have this thread archived.

    Happy surfing K'

ok...alot to cover here I guess.

    1. I downloaded spybot S & D and win patrol. I already had spyware blaster.
    2. My IE settings were actually already set up like that...i got the security level setting on "medium high." so thats good.
    3. I disabled alot of those programs at startup from win patrol. I was wondering what "groove monitor" does though. I always saw that on the tool bar and figured it was something important cuz it came with the computer. Also...does "hotkeys" or wahtever that program was make it so you can scroll with your mouse? I have a laptop and cannot scroll down by rolling my finger anymore. Thanks!
    4. Just curious because I ran kapersky on my other computer and it only took 2 hours. When I ran it on this computer (a smaller amt. of stuff on it), it took 4 hours. Whydo you suppose that is?
    5. I tried the IE w/o add ons and it loaded right up. What add ons do you suggest getting rid of? I just realized i have 2 tool bars (yahoo and avg). idk when I Dled each...infact i don't remember DLing either. I do use the yahoo one quite often...does the AVG one do anything that would be worth keeping it around? What add ons could I do without because 2 minutes to load a web browser is out of control.

    6. I haven't actually restarted my comp yet to see if it loads up faster but I guess I can accept the fact if it takes so long. I think that comodo seems to be what takes forever...it seems to load like 3 minutes after everything else loaded already. Is it really important to keep a firewall? Would I be ok if I just had windows firewal thing and avg shield going? Looks like this win patrol is a filter of sorts too.

    7. One thing I didn't mention when I ran combo fix. When it was doing whatever it does, the screen said repeatedly "access is denied." I wouldn't think twice about this if it wasn't for the fact that I've had a problem with my computer telling me that "access is denied" when I try to do some things on it. The last time I encountered this problem was when I tried to delete something from my computer on add/remove programs.

    8. Thanks for everything. I almost feel bad that there was actually no viruses with my comp and I had you spend all this time on me. I'm def. pleased I don't have problems on the comp. though. Thanks for the help.

3.Groove Monitor is related to Office 2007 http://www.systemlookup.com/lists.php?list=2&type=filename&client=malwaresearch-ff&search=GrooveMonitor.exe
." Also...does "hotkeys" or wahtever that program was make it so you can scroll with your mouse? "
It's possible, re-enable it and see if the scrolling works.

    4. Just curious because I ran kapersky on my other computer and it only took 2 hours. When I ran it on this computer (a smaller amt. of stuff on it), it took 4 hours. Whydo you suppose that is?
The other computer may have a faster processor, more ram or any number of other reasons

    5. I tried the IE w/o add ons and it loaded right up. What add ons do you suggest getting rid of?
Only you know which you don't use, start by getting rid of anything you don't need and see how you get on.

    6. I think that comodo seems to be what takes forever...
Comodo can be slow to load on some machines

    7. When it was doing whatever it does, the screen said repeatedly "access is denied."
There is no malware present, so unless you still get problems I wouldn't worry.

Just one question about the IE add ons again. Outside of the toolbars, what add ons are on IE? Im sure I only use the yahoo toolbar so I can probably dump the rest...is there a list of add ons that I could see and just click to enable or disable each? Are the toolbars the only add ons? Thanks!

actually one more thing...do you think I could go w/o comodo? Would win patrol, spybot s&d, spyware blaster, AVG, the windows built in firewall and adaware be enough to make comodo irrelevant or expendable? Thanks!

Start IE. Click Tools >> Manage Addons >> Enable or Disable Addons

Tough call, unfortunately malware changes faster than the tools can be updated.
Comodo will help prevent any malware that does get on your machine from "calling home" and/or downloading other dross.

It all depends on how much protection you want, and how careful your surfing habits are.
