You want the best DivX guides so you can get the best Quality when encoding to DivX?
http://www.doom9.org/divx-encoding.htm
You want the best Quality use Nandub.
Also you might wanna try Fairuse, it can also make kickass quality!
http://fairuse.releaseme.org/fu.html
If your a fanboy of DivxNetwork then use DivX5.02 Pro and be happy.
Dont forget XviD.... though I still dont get better quality with it, as a matter of fact Nandub and Fairuse and DivX5 do alot better. For guides on encoding with DivX5.02 Pro or XviD:

And a guide for the settings for DivX5.02 and DivX4.12:

Whats the next best thing since sliced bread and cheese.... and well maybe ATI's own MMC.... ShowShifter!
If MMC is not working right for you are you need something thats alot better for AVI capturing... then try Showshifter!
http://66.224.5.66/board/showthread.php?s=&threadid=33623596&highlight=showshifter
I also recommend AVI_IO...

How to frameserve:
With a frameserver you can do first editing in either Virtualdub or Adobe Premiere and then frameserve the video directly to any encoder without creating a temporily avi file.
How to FrameServe with Virtualdub:

How to frameserve with dvd2avi / VirtualDub / Avisynth / VFAPI:
http://www.vcdhelp.com/forum/userguides/87270.php
How to FrameServe with Adobe Premiere and Video Server Plugin:
http://www.videotools.net/guides/guide_premiere_tmpgenc.php
Create a DVD2AVI project:
http://www.doom9.org/mpg/dvd2avi.htm
In this step we're going to create a DVD2AVI project file. This project file can be later converted to a pseudo-AVI file for frameserving purposes. Please do not forget to write down the values mentioned in the guide.
SPECIAL NOTE This guides shows you how to do this when ripping a DVD.... you can also open any Mpeg2 file in DVD2AVI and save a project file with it. So dont think it just opens VOBs cause it can do alot more
Create a pseudo AVI:
http://www.doom9.org/mpg/vfapi_reader_codec.htm
Using the VFAPI Converter we're going to transform our DVD2AVI project file into something say Virtualdub/Nandub can use.
Happy capturing and editing!
