I don't know how many of you love more FPS but I sure do!
The Minecraft Coders Pack was recently updated so a ton of new mods for 1.0.0 will soon be upon us, my favorite so far has been optifine

I've almost always used this mod in the past versions and I highly recommend it to everyone who plays.
It also allows you to disable the "depth fog" at bedrock

this mod adds HD textures and a lot of options for better looks and performance. Doubling the FPS is common.
Moves fog away, adds mipmaps, chunk loading control (mod CAF), Smooth FPS, brightness control, VSync and many other.
Download OptiFine 1.0.0_HD_A (much faster Smooth Lighting, options Dripping Water/Lava and Debug Profiler, no selected block outlines when GUI is hidden (F1), fixed bug in texturepack change, fixed bug in Far View):
