Home Theater Suggestion

Can anyone recommend a good home theater system (just the receiver and speakers) for around $250?

Believe it or not, I've heard good things about Kenwood's Home Theater In A Box...

I always go to AudioReview.com as a starting point for my searches. Go to reviews, and then find the category you want... Then find the products with the most reviews, and find the best rated ones among them... As they say, 50,000 Elvis fans can't be wrong.

Once you have it narrowed down to a few, see if you can go somewhere to take a listen.... and avoid Bose at all cost.

This is the 2nd time today I find myself recommending audioreview.com here... Luckily I'm constantly recommending Short-Media to people, so my karma is good.

They make acceptable home theatre systems for $250.00 USD? I would have to question both the quality and performance of a 5 speaker system with receiver unit for $250.00 USD.

Hell, the receiver I use cost more than 4 times that (Harman-Kardon AVR-525). Not trying to brag, but I would like to honestly know how anyone can expect good sound performance on something so.... economically-priced?

AFAIK, the sound world is governed by one rule: you get what you pay for. Is this not true?

I spent around $100 for my Sony reciever. This was a few years back, and it was the lowest end model. It doesn't have the subwoofer outlet, but with 10" woofers on my old-school Curtis Mathis speakers, it wasn't really necessary .

I'm just now thinking about upgrading, but it has nothing to do with the sound - I want a home theater reciever that can juggle around svideo and composite video (and hell, digital/optical audio will come with it too).

Point being, you can get a good reciever for cheap. Speakers are where the money is.
