LiteOn using an alias?

I have just received my LiteOn dvd-rom.
It is a sweet drive.
It does not say much, but the sounds it does produces sounds rather different from my old drive.
I like the fact that it's length is reduced by a third compared to my cd-rom drive.

Well back on topic.
It put the drive in the machine.
Windows xp auto detected the drive.
But if you look in device manager it shows up as a JLMS XJ-HD165H. That is not very easy to pronounce
Is this important?
Should it be detected like that drive?
Windows also insists that it is a cd-rom drive, not a dvd-rom.

Yeah, some of the names in my device manager drive me nuts.

If you're really concerned about it, download drivers from the LiteOn site and try those.

MJO, I've got 2 Lite-On 16x DVD-ROM drives.
The one in my main rig (see sig) shows up in Device Manager as a "LiteOn DVD-ROM LTD163D", while the other one in my backup AMD T-Bird system shows up as a "JLMS XJ-HD165H"

Identical drives. Don't worry about it

Mine does the same thing, maybe some guy writing the name in the firmware just flubbed and left a firmware test name in as the identifier.

Allright then.
I just wanted to know whether or not I got hosed.
But it seems everything is in order.

None of my drives has ever run under an alias.

i'm gonna have to agree with mac on this one.... lite-on produces DVD and CD drives for many companies (like my DVD-ROM definitely has something like 'byte tech' stamped on the top, but it's a liteon) and they all badge them differently, that's all

Mine came in a retail box too.
I also found out that JLMS is short for, Jvc Liteon-It Manufacturing & Sales.
There is no doubt that it is a LiteOn.
It seems that it is the new name for LiteOn.
LiteOn's DVD department has merged with JVC.

I found out on this website.
http://digi.rpc1.org/support.htm

It also seems that you get what you pay for.
According to the above site their support is not very good.
At the JLMS site there is only firmware for four different drives.
That is insufficient.
Well I am beginning to see what Plextor uses the extra money for.

I forgot to mention.
It is much easier with my good old 24x Plextor burner.
It is named Plextor, no fuss and no alias.
