Can't open drive?

I have two PCs on a home network, PC1 and PC2, Untill tonight working fine. I've just tried to open the drive on PC2 from PC1and it's asking for a password. Nobody has set a password! I have tried through network places, My computer and windows explorer.
I can ping the PCs from each other and 'serch for a PC' finds it but I can't open the drive. I have looked at the drives properties and it's shared.
Bail me out again chaps.

In the user box, give it a username from the computer the drive resides upon, and the password to that user name if applicable.

If there are no accounts (User-made), use Administrator, and the applicable password (If any.)

Thanks for the quick reply Thrax.

On PC2 there are no passwords set. In the box that asks for the password, the user name if filled in, There is no password to enter, That's the problem.

Connect to the drives with windows explorer like this:

\\\C$

Replace C with whatever drive letter you wish.

Sorry Thrax, No idea what you mean, Excuse my ignorance.
I used to have a folder in network places for the drive on PC2 (d-xp2) like the two for xp1. It's not there anymore, I have PC2 under microsoft windows network (It never used to be) but when I try to open it I get the password box.

bothered, you should be able to just press enter at the password dialogue.

And when he means connect via windows explorer, open My computer or whatever folder and type \\\C$ in the address box. If you don't have it, goto View -> Toolbars -> Address bar.

Pressing enter doesn't get me in. Entering any password I use for anything else doesn't work. Putting it in the address bar gits me a box that says 'Windows cannot find, etc' How can I get rid of it and why isn't it just a folder under network places, as it used to be?

It may help to have them in the same workgroup. I don't think it matters, but it's worth a shot. Also, try unsharing and resharing the drive. It's like banging the PC with a hammer hoping it will work..

try typing \\IP\sharename into the IE address bar

sometimes that works better, and it's a good test to see if something is really broken

hmm...also make sure the Windows firewall is not on.

Tried all of these. What ever I do I get the password box, How can I get rid of the unknown password? I tried 'add network place' and it finds it, then asks for the password.

I had this before. Its because Guest access is dissallowed.

You need to go onto the machine, bring up the sharing permissions and add the user "everyone" to the list and set what permissions you want to have. Then do the same for the security tab.

This basically lets you use the drives remotely without needing to turn on Guest access on the machine.

Wow, go I feel stupid! I had asked the kids if they had set any passwords and they all said no. Turns out one of them set one for the guest account, Turned the password off and all is well again.
Lesson-Never overlook the obvious!

Reminds me of the times when I've been fiddling with this or that; check all internal cables, power connectors, and reset CMOS jumper. And then, the computer won't post. Oh no! The wife walks by and asks if the power cord is connected. "Of course it...", oops.
