My plan was to give this case a custom paint job, to liven up all the bare aluminum.

Here's the case all stripped down, just before I pulled out the drill to start removing the rivets holding it together.

After drilling out all the rivets I used Duplicolor METALCAST to mimic anodized aluminum

You start with a metalic silver under coat, then go over it with whatever color you want. Just keep the coat thin, so it's transluscent. If you go too heavy, it ruins the anodized look.

Next, I started to reassemble the frame. A good hand held rivet gun and some aluminum rivets did the trick.

Here's the frame fully assembled.

You may notice the floor of the case is blue here, well, it was. After painting it, I thought it was "too blue" so I took everything apart and repainted the inside top and bottom with the silver METALCAST. Looked good at new after it dried.

You see the drives going in along with the Neo-Power PS

The other pic shows the MoBo w/ most of the goodies installed.

Here she is during the burn in phase.

I left everything open and hanging, just in case there was a problem.

Since I'm using her to create this thread, I'd have to say it was a successful build.

Well, my digital camera is killing my memory cards so it may take a few days before I can post the conclusion.

NEXT: Wire Origami

Comments would be appreciated.

really nice. What will you do to replace the rivets ...use more or something else?
Also, where do you get that metalcast stuff? My next project could sure use it.

Thanks

Very Nice. Cool that you took it completely down, did your paint, and reassembled.
And I'll definitely go with clutch and others on --I like the colors.

Hi Simon,

I just re-riveted the case back together. You can buy a standard swivel-head rivet gun at ACE Hardware along with a box of aluminum pop-rivets. Make sure you check the rivet size.

Arrow® Swivel Head Rivet Tool (Rht300)
about $30.00 at ACE

You can get the METALCAST paints at any automotive store - got mine at CHECKER Auto Parts. Just remember, you need both the silver base color & whatever color you decide to use.

Re: My Latest Creation.. Part 2

Hi guys,

I was able to recover some of the pictures from one of my bad memory cards. I'll try to keep them in order

Here's a couple pics for the front of the case, door closed & open

Detail, Details, Details!

Did some masking and painting on the Motherboard tray too. I didn't disassemble this - TOO many rivets. Just spent a considerable amount of time taping off everything.

I included the smaller pic to highlight the thought that CoolerMaster puts into their cases. They put this hole here so you can remove or add cards without having to slide out the whole tray.

Yes I still have to do quite a bit of wire origami, but I ran into a little problem.

As I stated in the stats list, I used a Antec Neo-Power 480. While I am thoroughly impressed with the performance of this PS, their choice in cable parts leaves something to be desired.

I like a NEAT case, so I bought the Neo Power 480 thinking I could make custom cables for it - for aesthetics & improved air flow, not so.

ALL the connectors & pins on the Neo Power 480 are proprietary. The connectors will plug into, and power, all peripherals(HDDs, CDRWs, Fans, etc) with no problems, BUT since the pins have a proprietary locking mechanism, you cannot use standard male or female molex pins on them, say if you wanted make modifications to them. The fins on the sides of these pins are JUST different enough from a standard Molex pin, that a replacement pin will not lock into the housing, on either end. The pins on the power supply side are completely custom also. The ONLY place to get these pins is fron Antec's supplier in Taiwan, and they will only sell them in quantities of 10K! I have a plan to get around this setback, but it will take some time.

If I had known this before buying the Neo Power, I would have gone witha different PS, one that uses industry standard pins and connectors.

wow....that sucks about the neopower.

thank you for that valuable info though, b/c i, and i am sure many others, where looking at the neopower for their next psu purchase. i have been a loyal antec user for years now, but i might have to switch over to OCZ.

I like the modstream 520w...connectors look normal!
