Question How to view .mht file?

Would you please tell me: a method to view .mht file?

I get "The webpage cannot be displayed" error (To see the error, Please check an image attached to this post) upon open the file. (JavaScript is enabled).

Microsoft states "A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft" at this website, but they do not have a download link for the hotfix at the website.

Thank you for your time and help!

I'm no expert - but I have heard that you may experience this problem with IE7.

This work around might work for you -

Go to - Start > Settings > Control Panel > Folder Options > File Types
- Click on 'XLS' (Microsoft Excel Worksheet), in the extension list.
- Click on 'Advanced' button.
- Select 'Open in the same window'
- Click OK

Note: If this file is from an unknown source please be aware that it can carry a virus.

Now try to open your .mht file. Hope this helps.

Thank you for your quick response!

Edit\\
OS: WinXP Home.
Web Browser: IE7.

The "Open…" option was already selected by default.

I also checked MHT file’s "Open…" option; it is grayed and could not be selected. (To see the grayed option, Please check an image attached to this post).

Thank you Kentigern and all!

Please forget about above post#3.

Thank you for your quick response!

Edit\\
OS: WinXP Home. (Operating System installed in a PC having the .mht file error)
Web Browser: IE7. (Default web browser used in the PC)

(I really apologize for: no provision of the OS and browser info at above post #1; I could not edit the post within 24 hours* of posting the first post due to my work ----- *About a month ago, General Keebler had set 24 hour time limit on edition of a post in this forum (here) , to help combat spam here)

The .xls file's "Open…" option was already selected when I saw the option on Tuesday (12/21/2006). The option has been selected since the Tuesday.

A MHT file’s "Open…" option cannt be selected currently since it is grayed. (To see the grayed option, Please check an image attached to post#3 above).

I' unable to open a .mht file with firefox too ; I get "Firefox doesn't know how to open this address, because the protocol (mhtml) isn't associated with any program" error upon the openig. (To see the error, Please check an image attached to this post)

Thank you Kentigern and all!

Thank you for all your help!

Problem solved! Opera 9.0 opened it!
I attempted to open the mht file with several programs, and got following results:
(MS Office version: 2003)

Image of unopened errors displayed upon the attempt:

  • SharePoint Designer 2007

  • Expression Web 1.0

  • Maxton Combo 1.5.9.3, MAX's HTML Beauty++ 2004, PSPad 4.5.2 (I got same errors for all of these)

I did not try NetScape and SlimBrowser for the attempt since those browsers might contain adware/malware/spyware according to these (1, 2) SiteAdvisor's web safety testing result, and I do not wish the malicious programs to infect my PC.

I could not try MS FrontPage 2003 for the attempt since I do not have the FrontPage and could not download it from MS website; MS has discontinued FrontPage and replaced it w/ the SharePoint Designer and Expression Web according to this.

Thank you Kentigern and danball1976 for your time and month-long help!
