Found something I like about Dell !

A buddy was at a flea market last week and bought a box full (16 copies) of the manuals and cd's that come with new dell Inspiron 4100's for uhhhhh... nine bucks. Thats a total of nine bucks for the whole mess.

So he drops off a couple for me the other day and I pop them open and they each have full copies of Win XP and Office XP inside still shrink wrapped. I mean WTF ??? But couldn't find a cd-key ?? Tried to install last night on another box and it went on slicker then snot and just never asked for a damn cd-key.

So the weenie bought SIXTEEN full copies of Win XP and Office XP for friggin 9 bucks total.

but..... I gotta say I just love the no cd-key part !

Was talking to him last night and hes asked if I wanted a couple more...

Hummmmm. My experience is like csimon, you needed the key on the back of the computer and would not install on another machine.

Tex, I did the same thing once for a friend.

Took his dell XP cd, loaded it on a PC, walked away. About a week later, he started getting messages to register his machine with microsoft, or it would disable

*shrug* let us know

People have been going round college writing down all the WinXP CD Keys on the back of the computers as all the new P4 machines are running 2000 but all have XP Home CD keys on the back, lol.

That's how it was at my local college, when I took a night class last semester, it had the full cd keys nicely printed on a sticker on the back of all the machines. And they were running Windows 98. Looks like you got a really nice deal there tex, how many more does he have access to?

It may punk out in a week then.

The XP anti spy tool flips the registration flag in the registry I wonder if thats enough? Or if the keygens for XP work with it?

I'll keep you guys updated. As I said it installed fine... But you guys may be right about it crapping in 7 days.

But don't the CD's install drivers and other software? I could prolly get a few of them since my dad works logistecs for a sub-contracted company for Dell but I don't see the use for them.

Well, if you have to 'hack' it to keep from dieing, then its no better than any other 'warez' version. Value $0. Now, if you had something that was able to run unaltered, I would say you have a fair claim as a licensed machine which _is_ worth something.

Im confused about the big deal over this stuff... Whats teh advantage of being registered? I have pro and it has never asked to be registered. When i go to school and use the domain and stuff to log onto the network does it matter that i dont have a "registered" version?

I never had any problems using my XP Pro Corp laptop on the college domain, acted just like any other machine (they are all W2k).

Have to agree with what Rob said too though.
