Opera 7 for Windows

Opera 7.23 for Microsoft Windows

Anyone that knows me knows that I am a bit of a fanboy for the Opera web broswer. I have gotten everyone I know that will listen to convert (friends, parents, girlfriend) and I would like to think they are better off because of it. There are less vulnerability's than Internet Explorer and it has more functionality than any of the others. It has a built in pop-up blocker, email client, and tabbed windows. It also has a feature called mouse gestures that is just about the most useful tool ever. Even in comparison with Mozilla Firebird, the functionality of the tabbed windows, mouse gestures, and integrated pop-up blocker is much more efficient.

In any event, try it out and give it a whirl. There are 2 different versions: one you pay for and one that is free. The free one simply has a little banner in the top right corner, but its very unobtrusive and you can even specialize it to only show stuff that is interesting to you based on a questionairre. And if you do buy it, its 39 US dollars and absolutely worth it just to support the great job they are doing.

The latest version is version 7 and you can get to the download site through the link below. There are two different packages you can download: one with java and one without. And if you do not run Windows, Opera will run on Linux, Mac, Solaris, OS/2, FreeBSD, QNX and even on your smartphone or PDA.

Anyway, thats enough about that. Download it and give it a whirl!

I've been using Opera for a few weeks and it works pretty good. It loads pages faster than IE too, I find.

okay... i've been trying Opera for a while now, but i have a few complaints, and i haven't had the time to figure out where my configuration settings are wrong...

using Opera, i went to my favorite site (feel free to ignore my stylistic preferences...hehe) for streaming music, click on "listen live" and Opera tells me that i need to install Flash and Media Player 9. I have these installed already, of course.

Any idea what might be the problem preventing me to do this simple multimedia task?

yeah, unfortunately, many site will create websites that strictly cater to internet explorer. and this is just something that we have to deal with, for instance, when i do my banking online, i have to use internet explorer because there is formatting (and also some security settings, cuz ie is oh so safe ) that is written specifically for it. and typically where you see problems the most is with flash, java, and high security websites. so, hopefully it will get better, but as of right now, opera makes up for about 1% of all browsers. they have come a long way, but not far enough . . .

it's not that the sites won't work with other browsers. the problem is lazy web developers who develop their sites on IE, and then check them on other browsers only to find out they need to do more work on the site to make it look correct on other browsers. so instead of fixing, they check the browser user agent and send you to hell if you're not using IE. i think that just sucks personally. of course you can just change what user agent says in your browser....

okay, so in terms for a less tech-savvy guy like me...

is there something that i can do on this end to make opera work when the web developers haven't accounted for it?

i do like all of the other Opera features, and I'm considering buying it.

eureka!

I was able to sucessfully listen to the media stream by Identifying (Opera F12) as Mozilla 5 instead of Opera or IE...
