Please Help! Fatal exceptions,BSOD's,Graphics Problems :(

edited October 2009 in Hardware
A little background info:

I've recently had many issues with my computer. I took my computer into the shop and I was told that my graphics card had died..was an NVIDIA GeForce 8500GT 512GB DDR2; my hard drive was failing and I need more RAM..there was no mention of a bad processor or motherboard.

I bought a new graphics card..NVIDIA GeForce 9500GT 1GB DDR2, installed the drivers and my graphics problem seemed to have been fixed. Instead of buying a new hard drive, I took two from another computer..one is 40GB and the other is 250GB. Even though I was told that I was lucky the computer booted up since these drives have XP Pro installed whereas the failing drive had Vista, the computer booted up fine. I reinstalled the graphics card drivers from the cd that came with it, had to install sound drivers from the motherboard cd since I had no sound..everything SEEMED to be running okay. I also installed a brand new 1GB of Ram.

Now to the most recent problems:

1) I am still graphics problems. The textures and outlines on words and images on my computer are rough and jagged..not smooth like before. DxDiag shows some errors and suggests reinstalling DirectX. I read that DirectX 10 is only for Vista. If this is the problem where do I go and what file do I download? If it's the graphics card drivers, I installed the ones from the cd. I did see that there is an update on the website however many people are experience a multitude of problems after updating to the new driver version.

2) Whenever I try to launch certain applications (World of Warcraft and Ventrilo) I receive this error:

"The application failed to initialize (0xc0000005)"

Sometimes running the repair utility for the game helps..I can launch it sometimes other times not. Also whenever I'm doing anything on the computer..surfing the net, etc., my computer suddenly crashes and I get BSOD. I have the settings to not automatically restart but it still flies by in seconds.I ran the utility Bluecreen viewer..this is what it shows:

    Hi There,

You need to be patient. Everyone who uses this site and offers advice does so out of good will and free of charge. Three hours is not long enough to expect a reply in.

I think a re-install would probably be a good place to start. You will have a ton of unused drivers and all sorts of garbage on your machine. Copy all your imporant files onto the same drive as the OS. Wipe the second drive then copy anything you want saving back onto the second drive. You can then reformat and re-install the Primary partition.

You should always take drivers from the chipset manufacturers website. The ones that are bundled on the CD are so old they are almost pointless.

Seems like a fresh install is the way forward.. probably quicker as well as RichD said :)

Can start nicely then without any worries ;)

I would recommend doing a clean install. You pulled the harddrive out of another computer so the the drivers are likely very different between the two. On top of that new video card etc.... The issues you are having are because of broken driver installs and just general system confusion. It's best to do a clean install in this case.

Alternatively you could try and do a repair install, it will likely work, but that's assuming you've got no file structure damage from frequent crashing or other issues you've got.

Hi, thank you so very much for the replies. I apologize for my impatience, I do sincerely appreciate everyone's time and effort :)

I have never reformatted a drive before, so I'm not to sure how it all works. When I reformat the primary drive will it automatically reformat the second, or do I start with the second drive then do the first..or vice versa lol!

Also,in terms of all the drivers..after installing Vista will I then need to go to the motherboard website and try to determine what all I need, or should all the required drivers be installed when installing Vista. The only reason I ask is because when I went to the ECS site to try to find my sound drivers, there were so many different choices for everything I had no clue what was right for me.

As for the NVIDIA drivers, the ones on the cd seem to have been alright, but I'm sure as you mentioned they may be old. I do know there is an updated driver, however, I have read on the NVIDIA forums that so many people have been experiencing problems with the new update, I'm afraid to install it ><

Just a side note: I did try removing the new RAM to see if that was the problem, but the PC didn't even boot up with just old RAM in there. I then took out the old RAM and left the new RAM in there and still getting BSOD. So my question is,if, after completely reformatting both drives I still get these errors, what could the problem be? As I said, the people who initially looked at my computer didn't mention anything about a bad processor/motherboard.

I'm sorry for all the stupid questions, I'm just clueless when it comes to these things. And thank you all so much again for helping, it is so very appreciated :)

The only stupid question os an un-asked one ;) Im at work at the minute but I write you a brief guide on how to do a fresh install later tonight. I assume you have a Windows Vista Installation disk?

    Hi RichD :)

Oh that would be wonderful, thank you so much. Yes I do have a disk for Vista.

I'm currently zipping up and burning any files that I want to keep at the moment. It's funny, I can do things like zip files and such and my system is fine, but as soon as I try to surf the net for any period of time or launch World of Warcraft, my PC gets very annoyed and shuts down again.

I just hope that after reformatting my issues will be solved. If not then I have no clue what what the problem is v.v

Anyway, thanks again. I'll check back later or tomorrow so take your time :)

Oh, I just wanted to mention that every time I get BSOD I run Bluescreen viewer to check what the error was since the bluescreen goes by so fast. It's always the same error code, yet sometimes the questionable files are different. The hal.dll is always present, but sometimes it shows win32k.sys., or processr.sys., or nv4_disp.dll.

If it's not windows, it's memory or the video card. :) We can easily diagnose both.

    Hey guys,

I've been in the process of zipping up the stuff I want to keep and burning it to CD to prepare for the reformatting. Tonight, after I finished burning the first data disk, I BSOD and encountered this new error:

The ntoskrnl.exe has been present in all the previous errors I was getting, but this time it's a different stop error code. ( I am still getting the other BSOD screen I always have been though). I'm not sure what it means by "memory management", but I have been cleaning my drives of the files I have been burning so I have ample space on my hard drives..very weird.

I'm going to continue to try to burn the stuff I want to keep, so whenever any of you have the time, I would be so grateful if you could give me a little guidance on the reformatting process :) I posted a few concerns of mine when it comes to reformatting after Kryyst's reply. xD.

Thanks so much again for your help..it's much appreciated :)

    (I really hope it's ONLY Windows that's causing all this >< )

    Well, I decided to reformat.

For some reason I was unable to reformat my primary drive, however, I was able to reformat the 250GB drive.

After reformatting, I made the 250GB drive my primary drive...the other drive is not connected. I reinstalled Vista and everything seemed fine. I was able to surf the net, etc. I then tried to install World of Warcraft. I did have some problems with the installation..seemed to have encountered certain bad files or something..not entirely sure. Anyway, I still haven't been able to install the game.

Anyway, I then got BSOD with the blue screen code 124. It said uncorrectable hardware error. I have no idea why it's doing this again. The drive was completely clean, I installed Vista and everything appeared to be functioning normally. All I've done since reformatting is the following:

    1) Installed Windows Vista
    2) Installed the video card drivers
    3) Installed Firefox
    4) Attempted to install World of Warcraft..which failed.

It seemed I didn't need to install any drivers for the motherboard separately. I had all the sound drivers, etc, when Vista was installed.

I don't understand why this is still happening.

    Info of BSOD:

At this juncture I would say a few things:
    1) The hard drive you could not format is probably dead.
    2) I think your memory is bad. Try this: http://icrontic.com/articles/diagnose_with_memtest86

Hi Thrax, thanks for the reply.

The drive that I couldn't formatted isn't connected.

I went to the memtest page. At the top of the page I chose Download - Pre-Compiled Bootable ISO (.zip)

When I extracted it, all I saw was an ISO file. In the article it says to run the “runme.bat” file, which I do not see...only the ISO file.

I want to use a CD btw.

I am so incredibly stupid when it comes to these things, I have no idea what I'm doing lol!.
  • edited October 2009
Oh nvm, that .bat file is to make a floppy :p

I'll try to make the bootable cd..but how do I get the computer to boot from CD?

Here's a free and easy way to turn that ISO into a bootable CD: http://icrontic.com/articles/burn_iso_disc_image_free

Most PCs are set to boot from CD from default.

Awesome thank you..I'll have a look.

Just thought I'd mention that when I was trying to install my CD burning software..in this case Roxio..I got BSOD again with Stop error code 124...as I did when trying to install World of Warcraft..very strange .

I think I'm about ready to trash this POS computer lol!
  • edited October 2009
Memtest is currently running..I'm on my roommate's computer at the moment.

I wanted to mention that on the the memtest screen, there is nothing listed beside "chipset" and no "settings" under that which I see in the screen shots in this article http://icrontic.com/articles/diagnose_with_memtest86

Do I need to enable these or does that already indicate a problem?

So far, there are no errors listed, but I will let it run awhile and check back.

    Thank you again Thrax.

Ah, no big deal if nothing is listed in those areas. :) Just let it run for about an hour and wait to see if it tosses up any errors. If it doesn't, I have some other ideas, and if it does, we've probably found our culprit.
  • edited October 2009
Ok, let Memtest run for 2 passes..no errors found.

Just a recap since my troubles began:

    1) Replaced video card
    2) Replaced memory
    3) Replaced hard drive
    4) Reformatted hard drive
    5) Did a fresh install of Windows Vista
    6) Installed video card drivers
..everything seemed to be functioning normally...
    7) Attempted to install World of Warcraft and Roxio burning software..BSOD
    8) Ran Memtest ->> no errors found

Blue screen errors since reinstalling Windows, then attempting to install software:

There are only four things left I can think of:

    1) Your CPU is overheating. Download and run CoreTemp from here: http://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp/ -- when you run it, tell me what it says in the Core #0 and Core #1 boxes (Core #3 and Core #4, too, if they're there).

    2) Your power supply isn't delivering enough power. You can test that with a digital multimeter (DMM). There is a guide to using a DMM right here: http://www.devhardware.com/forums/power-supply-units-98/what-s-a-multimeter-how-to-use-it-to-test-75111.html

    3) Your motherboard is dying.

    4) Your CPU is dying.

Hi Thrax, thanks for getting back to me.

    1) I attempted to run CoreTemp, and as soon as I clicked it I got an error saying
"This Intel processor is not supported"

    2) I checked out that guide for DMM. All I can say is omg lol! That is so in-depth and completely beyond me.I really don't think I can do that on my own.

Are there any other options to test the temperature that would support my processor? Any way to test my motherboard and CPU? Or should I bring it into the shop and have someone who knows more about that run those tests (although when initially brought in, I wasn't told anything was wrong with the motherboard or CPU).

I don't know, perhaps we've just exhausted everything and it's time to throw this PC to the curb.

    Sigh..:(

Everyone here has been so helpful and I sincerely appreciate all of your effort.

While I look for an easier DMM guide, can you tell me what kind of CPU you have?

As far as testing is concerned: There's nothing a shop can do for money that we can't do for you for free on the Internet. :) Save your dough and stick with Icrontic. We'll get it figured out.

Either it's too early in the morning or I'm a total moron..how do I find out what kind of CPU I have LOL!

    Yep, I think it's too early =P

As for the DMM test, I can't imagine there's any other way except to go out and buy a separate device..which is unfortunately not feasible for me right now :(

Is there a sticker on the front of the case that tells you? :D Did you build it yourself? Have someone build it for you?

Hi Thrax, sorry it took so long to get back to you.

Well, I decided I had just had enough and got a new computer lol!

I want to thank you and everyone else who took the time to try to resolve my ongoing PC issues with that hunk of junk. I'm sure we would have found the problem eventually, but I think that PC had it's day and was time to lay it to rest :p

I am still having an antialiasing issue in World of Warcraft, but I guess I should start a new thread for that.

Thank you so much again for your time and patience, it is sincerely appreciated :)

Well, hell, that's an easy fix if ever. ;D Glad we could give it a go for you, and we can definitely help with AA in World of Warcraft.

Go ahead and start a new thread for that, and we'll get that one solved in a jiff.
