Starcraft series, Warcraft series, Supreme Commander, any of the C&Cs except the crappy FPS.. Basically any top-down RTS. They all fit the 4x profile, by in large.

    Master of Orion series

I would say Turn-based strategy games are thought more of as 4x games.

4x stands for explore, expand, exploit and exterminate.

I love the Starcraft and Warcraft games, but never really got into anything else besides Age of Empires II for a while.

A friend of mine plays Starcraft online to this day. It's great.

Warcraft III : The Frozen Throne is IMO the best RTS I've ever played, including the new C&C3

Been coming back to it for years and it is still fun. The balance is so great that there is no single dominant strategy as there is always a counter-strategy. You can't just mass a few units and win.
