I need to upgrade my cpu! can you help me please?

edited July 2008 in Hardware
Firstly hi their! OK so I have been tinkering with the idea of upgrading my cpu for some months now. I regularly use photo editing applications and dvd encoding applications, Ive been monitoring my cpu usage for a while and it is regularly 100%. So I guess its time to upgrade. I would appreciate if someone could point me in the right direction.I have installed more ram memory so I think I am fine on that front. This is my current configiration..............

Operating System: Windows XP Home Edition (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 3 (2600.xpsp.080413-2111)
Language: English (Regional Setting: English)
System Manufacturer: Packard Bell BV
System Model: 00000000000000000000000
BIOS: Phoenix - AwardBIOS v6.00PG
Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3200+, MMX, 3DNow, ~2.0GHz
Memory: 2558MB RAM
Page File: 304MB used, 4655MB available
Windows Dir: C:\WINDOWS
DirectX Version: DirectX 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904)
DX Setup Parameters: Not found
DxDiag Version: 5.03.2600.5512 32bit Unicode

I would like to change to a dual core cpu, I need to know if this is possible for my config. The skt is AM2. Thanks in advance.

You don't state what brand motherboard you have, but generally you should be able to upgrade to a dual core processor with at most a bios update. Can you tell us what brand motherboard you have or if it's a computer built by a major oem such as Dell or HP, the model number?

You will definitely get a boost going to dual core, but you may need to update your BIOS first (I got this from the link you provided). The AM2 6000+ (actually mentioned in your BIOS release notes) would be a significant replacement for a 3200+ Orleans core.

However, I find that using 100% of the processor unusual unless it's doing a DCP (Distributive Computing Project like Folding@Home). Mind if I ask what you're using it for?

So you have 2.5gb of ram as stated in your first post or the 512mb as of the system specs sheet? If you only have 512mb ide suggest also upgrading to 2gb as well.

When you say, "Ive been monitoring my cpu usage for a while and it is regularly 100%," I am also curious and suspicious. I am suspicious that you may have too many processes running at startup. What does Task Mgr. show is actively running at idle? Also, being pegged at 100% cpu usage is suggestive of malware. Have you checked your system for things like this? Not to discourage you from upgrading cpu's, but it sounds like something else is going on that a new cpu may not help.

Uh, the 3200 is a 939 package, not an AM2 package. His TOP END chip is the FX-62. He will need to acquire the LATEST bios, or provide me with a dump since it's a phoenix (I WILL NOT HELP YOU DO THIS). And 100% CPU usage on a single core is common with XP after some software's been installed.

Might want to format though, you might have some mal/spyware.

    The 3200 was also AM2 and 754.

For the iStart 1360 it has an Asus M2NS-NVM; AM2 if you didn't catch it in the board name. 667MHz mem max, runs down to DDR2-400. Got the GeForce 6100 north so any of the Athlon series chips will go for the board, like it was said will most likely need a bios update.

Wow. Packard Bell still makes PCs? Didn't know they still existed. Had an old 486 SX 50 made by them. Good times. Good times...
