Help w/ Trojan, problem with Adobe acrobat

Help please!
I have picked up a virus/spyware from somewhere and am having a difficult time ridding my computer of it. The problem keeps coming back.
I have run updated ad-aware se , spybot search and destroy, ccleaner, cws shredder, and hijack this analyser( Deleting The items called for). I am also running Avast anti virus updated.
One item that keeps reappearing is( C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\SE.DLL) Indications are this is a virus/spyware/malware.? I will generally run hijack this at startup and delete the bad stuff I know of so I can get online. In my current hjt file there is no sign of it but In a scan of my current startuplist it shows up. I assume it won't show in hjt until it is prompted to load from wherever its hiding. This seems to happen when I try to log on to some websites, I will be redirected to an about blank search engine then I get popups And Internet explorer gets hijacked. I noticed in hjt a number of these (R1,R1,R0) The analyzer said these are safe, what would happen if I fixed these?
I am kinda at wits end and am tempted to take the ball bat to this thing.
Thank you for any assistance you can give
Jim M
P.S. I was going to send a log of files fixed by avast And spybot search and destroy(quarentined in the virus chest and deleted by s+d) but couldn't copy and paste them to notepad. Let me know if this info would help ,I can type them out if necessary.

I also can't access my adobe acrobat 6.0 since this all started. Can you help me figure out whats wrong with this progam? I get----

Please download this tool and extract it to your desktop.
    http://www.derbilk.de/SpSeHjfix_Beta9.zip

Start SpSeHjfix_Beta9.exe click on " Desinfecton starten". It will reboot your computer to complete the cleaning process. Once it is done please post a new hijackthis log.

    Hi Sam ,
Did as requested. After the program ran a window opened asking if i wanted to close the zip file first(???) otherwise some files would be saved in TEMP. I picked no/(some files were saved) Was this the correct action? I figure they will be gone next time I run ccleaner.
    On reboot I got-
    RUNDLL
    Error Loading
    C:\Windows\Cloyd.gif
The System can't Find the File Specified. Is this a problem or just part of the Trojan removal?
Somewhere along the line here I saw a suggestion I might want to use an alternative browser, what are my options?

Also last evening I ran (AGAIN) a full system scan with Avast antivirus.
It could not check these files due to pasword protection. I never set up a password w/spybot or ad aware. Here are a few examples. If you want the full list I can list them
I just thought this would give you the idea And easier on the eyestrain.
C:\WINDOWS\WIN386.SWP [E] The process cannot access the file because (32)
    C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Recovery\BDEProjector.zip\Update\zupdate.exe [E] Archive is password protected. (42056)
    C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware SE Personal\Skins\Ad-Aware SE default.ask\arrow1.bmp [E] Archive is password protected.
there are probably more than 50 files that couldn't be checked.
Keep in mind this was before I ran the zip file.
    Thanks again for the help.

If you're looking for a good alternate browser check out Firefox.
    http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/

Your virus scan won't be able to delete those files because they are in quarantine. Just open up Spybot and Adaware and remove all quarantined files and your scan should come back much cleaner.

    Have hijackthis fix these lines.

Aside from that, your log is clean!

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
    1. Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point left over from what we have just cleaned.

You can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:

      Managing Windows Millenium System Restore

      or

      Windows XP System Restore Guide

Renable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

    2. Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
      1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
      2. Click once on the Security tab
      3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
      4. Click once on the Custom Level button.
        1. Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
        2. Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
        3. Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
        4. Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
        5. Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
        6. Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
        7. When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
        8. If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
      5. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

    3. Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

    4. Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

    5. Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

      Understanding and Using Firewalls

    6. Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

    7. Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

    8. Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

    9. Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

    10. Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

    Sam,
Thanks a ton I really appreciate your help. I have 3 remaining questions.
1- Should I just delete the zip file I downloaded to remove the se dll problem or is it worth saving for a later date?
2- I'm running win98se on this computer is there a way to disable and reenable system restore on this.
3-can you tell me the why and wherefor re/ the zip file I used. Was it something you made /+ generally what did it do . Other than the obvious. I'm just one of those people that want to know how'd it do that?
Oh and that rain your getting is the reason you have to mow all that grass and the golf courses are so great /here in the desert we just paint the rocks green,LOL

1 - Keeping the file is really your preference. As long as you don't get the bug that reinfects SE.DLL you won't need it. However, it won't hurt to keep it around. Your call.

2 - Windows98 does not have a built in system restore like XP does. So don't worry about it.

3 - That program you downloaded fixed the se.dll issue. SE.DLL is a IEplugin. It is considered spyware because it monitors the websites you vist, can modify you favorites, display ads, etc. Really annoying stuff! The program you downloaded just simplified the process of removing it.
