Please go here & install ALL critical updates required for your system, including service pack 1a for both XP and IE6.
Most malware is designed to attack unpatched XP systems - exploiting the available 'holes' - and can bypass third-party protection on an unpatched system. The most that can be done with an unpatched system is put a temporary bandage on it. Your system can potentially be reinfected within minutes of cleaning it.

    ===================

Please read these instructions carefully and print them out! Be sure to follow ALL instructions!

Download smitRem.zip and save the file to your desktop.
Right click on the file and extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
    http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

    Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:
    Ad-Aware SE Setup
    Don't run it yet!

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
    1. Restart your computer
    2. After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
    3. Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
    4. Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Now scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items:

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Microsoft Update] mssvc32.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Intel system tool] C:\WINDOWS\System32\hookdump.exe

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

    Run Ewido:
    • Click on scanner
    • Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
    • During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK
    • When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a check in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections" then choose clean and click OK.
    • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
    • Save the report to your desktop
    Close Ewido

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Website > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut, then do a full system scan. Make sure the autoclean box is checked!
Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of the smitfiles.txt log and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.
Let us know if any problems persist.

    Hi Crunchie,

Thanks for your help. I've done as instructed without doing the updating of the crtitical updates for the system as mentioned in the first step first as I had problems accessing the site at first. So I went ahead and did the rest asmentioned (though I used the "fix check" function after checking on the items you mentioned in hijackthis. Was I not supposed to?) and then I tried to do the critical updates for Win XP in the end but I was prompted with the msg that Windows was unable to install the updates. Did I do something to cause it?

Also, I noticed that in SmitRem, they mentioned that Wininet.dll is infected but a good copy could not be found. And in PandaScan, certain infections could not be disinfected. Does this mean that I am still unable to use my sound card? I have yet to try and reinstall the sound card driver. Should I do something else before I try and do that? I was unable to reinstall the sound card driver initially before I managed to engage your help. Really appreciate your help. Anyway, thanks also for listening to my ramblings and my logfiles are as follows. What should I do next?

You did right by doing the 'fix checked.' It was an oversight on my part.

    Wininit

Open Notepad, and copy/paste the following into a new file:
    dir %Systemdrive%\wininet.dll /a h /s > files.txt
    start notepad files.txt
Save this as FindFiles.bat, choose to save it as *all files and place it on your desktop.

Double click on FindFiles.bat and post the content of the text file you get in your next reply

    Hi Crunchie,

Not sure that I did it correctly, but I just need to open the files.txt file, after double clicking on the .dat file, right? Anyway, here's what I got.

Volume in drive C has no label.
    Volume Serial Number is 78BA-CCF1

You may need to give it a little more time to run. The first time the text file appears it does not have the full list, after a little more time whatever it finds will just pop into it :).

    Hi Crunchie,

This is what I got. The text.txt file pop up once the cmd windows closes by itself. So I suppose this is the full information?

Volume in drive C has no label.
    Volume Serial Number is 78BA-CCF1

    Wininit

Please enable viewing of hidden files by following the directions on this page for your particular operating system.

Locate this file using Windows Explorer (You can get to Windows Explorer, by Going to Start > "My Computer", then double-clicking "C:\"):

    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\wininet.dll

Right-click on it and select "Rename" and rename it to wininet.old

Then on top in the menu, choose tab 'view' > 'refresh'
Look if there is a new wininet.dll created in your system32-folder. If there is, stop here and post back to let me know.

    If not:

    Go into this folder:

    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adaptec Shared\System

Locate wininet.dll. Right-click on it and choose "Copy".

Go back to your C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM folder, go to the "Edit" menu, and choose "Paste".

Then reboot your computer into normal mode.

    Find and delete these files:
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\wininet.old
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\oleadm32.dll

    Reboot your computer again.

Go to Jotti Virus Scan once again.

    Upload C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\wininet.dll again.

Let it scan and post the results in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log.

I can't locate the file, "wininet.dll" in C:/windows/system. There's no such file there. Even after using serach, I can only locate the file in:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adaptec Shared\System and C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download\6ca7b3a8e fd5a9b6f87fff395a2eb989. So should I skip the renaming of that file in C/windows/system part and went straight to the "If Not" part. But I skipped the delete the old winint.old and oleadm32.dll part as well since I could not find the former in the first place and also, the oleadm32.dll is not in the folder as well.

I've uploaded the new "wininet.dll" in Jotti Virus Scan and results as follows:

    AntiVir Found nothing
    ArcaVir Found nothing
    Avast Found nothing
    AVG Antivirus Found nothing
    BitDefender Found nothing
    ClamAV Found nothing
    Dr.Web Found nothing
    F-Prot Antivirus Found nothing
    Fortinet Found nothing
    Kaspersky Anti-Virus Found nothing
    NOD32 Found nothing
    Norman Virus Control Found nothing

    VBA32 Found nothing

Looks like you are doing a good job :).

    ===============

Run HiJackThis, click "Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

    O3 - Toolbar: Web assistant - {0B53EAC3-8D69-4b9e-9B19-A37C9A5676A7} - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\AdBlocking\NISShExt.dll (file missing)
    O3 - Toolbar: Adobe PDF - {47833539-D0C5-4125-9FA8-0819E2EAAC93} - C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 6.0\Acrobat\AcroIEFavClient.dll (file missing)

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Microsoft Update] mssvc32.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [websx] C:\Program Files\websx\int437937.exe -auto

Now, close all instances of Internet Explorer and any other windows you have open except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

    ===============

Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure you are able to view system and hidden files/ folders:

    folders...

    C:\Program Files\websx

    Search for...

    mssvc32.exe

    ...using "Start | Search...".

    -

Note that some of these file(s)/folder(s) may or may not be present. If present, and cannot be deleted because they're 'in use', try deleting them in "Safe Mode".

    -

    Reboot.

    ===============

After rebooting, rescan with hijackthis and post back a new log. Please let me know how your pc is now.

I am not seeing anything bad in your log now :). Can you try to get service pack 1a for your PC now. That may rectify the problem you are having with your sound card.
You can download it here http://www.softwarepatch.com/windows/winxpsp1.html if you cannot get it from the M$ site.
