And unless I am mistaken, just because Steam comes to Linux does not mean many games will be playable.

You're right, but there have been rumbles of them porting the source engine to *nix for a while as well.

Not saying it'll happen, but it could.

At the very least, having Steam on Linux allows for a distribution system for other games and indie devs to get into the action on more platforms.

On April 29th Ubuntu 10.04 comes out. I have played with the beta, and I will say that there are a few surprises. Popular plug and play devices are working, if not 100% functional. My wifes Ipod touch can swap files in ryhthem box (any day now Apple will release firmware to break it I would bet)

My Cannon printer and scanner works where in prior versions it just would not work plug and play, and yes, the community is a buzz that Steam is going to happen.

I've often said there were two real barriers for Ubuntu adoption, its itunes which is so entrenched its really an important part of the "common" user experience, and gaming. Linux can game, there are some great examples of it, but I want Steam cross platform.

I'm not saying Ubuntu is going to take over the world like the die hard linux nerds will say, but I will tell you this. Plug and play ipod support with or without itunes, and steam = double the share they have now by this time next year.
