Dell, the only top-tier server company to have stuck completely with Intel chips, was caught in a seeming act of infidelity Wednesday, offering for sale on one of its Web sites a processor from Intel's archenemy AMD.
[blockquote]"There was an erroneous posting of a processor kit on that site today," the representative said. "It was intended to be posted to a single customer's Premier Page site...and it inadvertently was posted more broadly than that."

Pack the car, buy the airline ticket, or get a new pair of walking shoes. Just do whatever it takes to be at QuakeCon 2004. The 9th annual QuakeCon video game festival and tournament storms into town August 12-15 at the Gaylord Texan Resort & Convention Center in Grapevine, Texas, U.S.A.
[blockquote]“QuakeCon is the Woodstock of gaming, with thousands of fans from around the world coming together for 4-days of non-stop competition, parties, and just hanging out with friends,” said Todd Hollenshead, CEO, id Software. “QuakeCon attendees expect the biggest and best -- they won’t be disappointed. There simply is no equal.”[/blockquote]

It has been reported that Nvidia's upcoming NV40 chip has finally got its name. And, unless Nvidia changes its mind, just to annoy us, it will call its next generation chip the Geforce 6800.
[blockquote]Geforce 6800 sounds good but then Geforce FX 6800 was the original name for NV35 before Nvidia suddenly changed its mind. Perhaps the NV35 did not perform well enough to deserve that name.

It has been reported that AMD will not adopt DDR2 in 2004, and certainly not well into 2005.
[blockquote]AMD's DDR2 philosophy revolves around "performance, price and availability"; that is, AMD will not implement DDR2 until all three of those criteria are suitable for entry. Our sources claim this is the same strategy AMD approached to memory when it chose DDR memory over Rambus several years ago.

Seeking growth beyond the PC, Intel showed its first handheld graphics chip and Microsoft said it would unify its PC and console graphics environments on the opening day of the Game Developers Conference here.
[blockquote]Aimed at a rising tide of cell phones and PDAs with 3D graphics, Intel described Marathon, a 3D chip it will formally launch in tandem with its next-generation cell phone chip, Bulverde, at the Intel Developer Forum in Taipei, Taiwan, in April. Intel is working with 20 game developers and expects to have five game titles running on the chip using the OpenGL ES interface when it is launched. [/blockquote]

Silicon Image has officially released a new SATA RAID driver for Windows based operating systems. This driver was recently posted by Microsoft on their Windows Update site, but many people have been experiencing problems getting the update to install correctly. Now though the driver is available for independent download direct from Silicon Image. Thanks to Equito for the heads up on this one.

It has been reported that a very senior official from one of Intel’s major chipset customers, has confirmed that everything is roadmapped for the chip giant to, somewhat predictably, follow AMD’s lead and introduce desktop, workstation and server processors that not only feature support for the iAMD instruction set but with AMD64 style integrated memory controllers.
[blockquote]Aside from the significant revenue they receive for this, it also opened the potential for Intel to exercise control over all the third party Taiwanese mainboard manufacturers and other partners and customers. This market dominating position has been a key factor in Intel’s success.[/blockquote]

For those of you wanting to find out exactly what went on between the EU and Microsoft, this easy to read FAQs article should help bring you into the know.
[blockquote]Q: What exactly did the European Union say?
A: European regulators said that Microsoft broke EU law by abusing its "near monopoly" market power in the workgroup server and media player markets.
What does Microsoft have to do?
It must create a version of the Windows PC operating system that does not have the Media Player included and offer that to computer makers within 90 days. It also must create "complete and accurate documentation" within 120 days that will allow other companies' workgroup servers to be completely interoperable with Windows. It must pay a fine of about $613 million.

Intel recently announced their plans to put into effect a performance rating system for their CPU's, over that of naming a product with its relative clock speed like they do now. This move definitely looks set to confuse consumers, perhaps even more so than AMD did when they employed their performance rating system a couple of years ago. Here's the latest info regarding Intel's plans.
[blockquote]So what’s on the table? The cash strapped might be looking at a "3xx Series" processor which will be a Celeron D or M processor - the D and M are new designations for Celeron too, representing desktop and mobile parts.
More well heeled mainstream buyers will be able to select from Pentium 4 5xxx Series desktop and mobile parts.
Finally, P4 Extreme Edition for the nutty and the overlocking megahertz whores and the genuinely cool Centrino mobile stuff should fall into the top 7xx Series.

Software giant Microsoft is reportedly facing the biggest fine the EU has yet imposed for abuse of market dominance.
[blockquote]But EU member states met to discuss his proposals on Monday, after which leaks swirled round Brussels that it would be nearly 500m euros ($616m; £334m).
Microsoft has a cash pile of more than $50bn, so even a fine on this scale is unlikely to hurt it commercially.
