Cingular to buy AT&T Wireless for $41B
Cingular Wireless has agreed to buy AT&T Wireless for more than $40 billion. The deal could result in the creation of the largest cellular subscription base.
[blockquote]The deal, confirmed after the British company Vodafone Group PLC said it had withdrawn from the two-way bidding war, creates a combined company with a potential 46 million subscribers, Cingular said Tuesday in announcing the agreement.
The current market leader, Verizon Wireless, reported 37.5 million subscribers in its quarterly earnings report last month.
"This is great news for America's wireless users," said Stan Sigman, president and CEO of Atlanta-based Cingular in confirming his company's winning bid, which is subject to the approval of AT&T Wireless shareholders and federal regulatory authorities.

Good for me, I have Cingular :P
Actually the service isn't bad at all where I live. *shrug*
I JUST signed up with AT&T a few weeks ago because Cingular sucks around here as well. But I assume it'll end up with more non-roaming towers throughout the US.

I wanted to switch to verizon so I could get one of the phones they were offering, but I am stuck on one more year of cingular. Stupid contracts. Luckily I live in So. Cal. so anywhere I go I have full signal pretty much.
Your mileage may vary.

Yeah, well since AT&T Wireless wanted to "lock me" into my rate for a year, I'm hoping Cingular won't be wanting to change agreement terms because I got a super good deal, in my opinion.
Free phone with digital service, free long distance, Free nights and weekends (9pm+ and 9pm fri-6am monday) and I get 350 anytime minutes, I only pay $29.95/month. But my AT&T one year contract expires in June so if there's any problems with my new provider (grrrr) I'll be jumping on the Verizon bandwagon, I might think about T-Mobile also because I used to have one of those "pay as you go" phones from tmobile and the coverage was excellent, my brother has a phone through them and has very reasonable rates. Luckily whereveer I go I can now take my number with me, w00hoo :::middle finger to cell phone industry::::
Verizon sucks here in Cincinnati. They screwed me in the ear so hard with the contract I will never, ever, ever use their service again, even if Cingular FUBARs AT&T. Although we don't get AT&T itself here, we get Cincinnati Bell Wireless, which uses the AT&T network. Although CBW stays seperate from AT&T Wireless firmly - we get different rate plans and no contracts. So I can envision the merger doing nothing but expanding my network...
Cingular is all-GSM, correct? I'm still using a TDMA phone on CBW so that I can get nationwide service, since AT&Ts GSM network is a little bit lacking right now.
Agreed, I got the same plan but for 2 phones and 500/1000... According to what I read they will continue to opperate both companies seperately for a while... The only good thing about the cingular plans that I saw was the rollover minutes other than that coverage area and plans sucked...
