Windows XP Updating Problem

I went to the Windows Update site to check for updates, and had these two Critical Updates:

Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 (KB832894)
and
Security Update for Windows XP (KB828028)

Neither would install. The download box would come up, and a few seconds later it'd take me to the page saying they failed to install. I had a similar problem a few months ago, but I can't remember exactly what I did to fix it. :(

Any suggestions, please ? :)

    Welcome to SM Starryeyed :)

I think most of the regulars are sleeping as it's US time but the UK contingency is about :D

Anyway, I found this was what fixed my borked Windows updates a while back.

    Updates fail to install.

In most cases a corrupted CatRoot2 folder causes this. You can fix this by renaming the \Windows\System32\CatRoot2 folder to CatRoot2OLD.

Note that you do not want to rename the \Windows\System32\CatRoot folder! ... just the CatRoot2 folder!

Now try again to get the update that failed to install previously.

If that doesn't sort the problem out, then we can start lurking a bit deeper in it ;)

Thank you for the welcome and suggestion ! It seems to be working. It's actually downloading now at least. :)

It's not un-common. I only found this little nugget out by accident :)

The other way is to empty the CATROOT2 folder of its contents. The contents get rebuilt if needed. Basicly, corrupt download happened, an update got borked(the CLSID named folders in the subfolders in CATROOT2), the update index got borked (file ebd).

Hey, I'm having a similar problem to this, only it's on a Windows 2000 machine. So I went in looking for the CATROOT2 folder and I could only find a CATROOT folder. So, should I empty this one instead?
