that sucks bro. are you sure it's dead? can you try it in another computer? It sounds pretty dead to me. I wouldn't blame it on SP1 though, I think it was gonna die, it just happened to do it at that time.

There would have been a lot of HDD activity which may have causes it to go south.

Go to the manufacturer's website (western digital, seagate, etc) and download their diagnostic tool. That will tell you for sure if the drive is farked.

Yeah, run some diagnostic tools on it, then rma if it's still under warrantee. What mmonnin said might have happened but if so, then it was about to die anyways.

If it was from the 486 days, than it's prolly too small to be worthwhile anyhow.

I'd forget about that drive, and buy one that's larger, faster, and more reliable for much less than your parents paid for it when the drive was brand spankin' new.

I have a harddrive from a 386 machine that died, it was from 1986 though so i didnt really care. But those old harddrives dont have much space on them anyway, so youd be better off getting a new one.

Take the cover off and hang it on the wall. I have a 5 1/4" Bigfoot, a standard 3.5" drive, and a 2.5" laptop drive on my wall. Every person who visits asks about them. They always think it's pretty cool, though they're disappointed when they find out that they aren't some weird part off the space shuttle. :vimp:
