As in, the monitor doesn't list 640 x 480 as an available resolution?

If so, right click on the desktop. Go to properties, settings tab, click advanced, go to the adapter tab, hit list all modes, then select your resolution.

I had nearly the same problem. I was able to get into the BIOS, but could see nothing between that and the logon screen. If I ran chkdsk I had to refer to the log to be sure it ran; the screen never showed, just a long pause with a blank screen while it ran.

Pick a simple program and set it for 640X480 in the compatibility section. (See pic). This might force windows to conjure up a driver tweak to fix the problem.

I say "might" because I'm not really sure what I did to correct it, though it did go away. You may wish to try a different video and/or monitor driver, too.

It may be that your video card is putting out a refresh rate that is too high for the monitor to sync to at 640x480. Do you have a spare video card that you can try just long enough to see if you can see any info on the screen at boot up?

If you have any kind of utility that can set the sync speed, try dropping your sync at 640x480 down to 60Hz... I would think that just about any monitor out there should be able to sync to that... I think by default, 640x480 is at like 120Hz or something on my Sony G400... (I'd have to double check, but I think that's right...)
