Diagnostics software?????

G'day folks, with all the problems we are having with our newly built computer, we got to thinking about the availability of a "One program does all" type diagnostics software.

Searching through google brought up heaps of them. Sufficient to create more confusion. I know Sandra has been mentioned in different postings, but it appears to be restricted to do certain tasks.

If a software tool is available for checking your system, reporting conflicts and telling you how to fix it, that would be a wonderful thing.

We have tried the stuff that came with XP Home, but we still can't find out the reason (and fix) why our puter just decides to shut it self down.

I can't say "Money is no object", though we are quite willing to pay the purchase price for any chosen package. As long as it is not one of those costing heaps for professional computer engineers to use. :banghead:

Anyhow, best i stop rambling. Hopefully you got the idea of what i am chasing.

Regards

Jon

If you find one, let me know :D

Honestly, there isn't one. The diversity of hardware, platforms, chipsets, etc. is such that a all-in-one package just isn't out there.

Your best all-in-one diagnostic package is that shiny "New Thread" button up at the top of this page there... :D

Well thanks guys. Now i know why this place has such a special feel about it. You are as sick as me, lol.

In all fairness to a layperson like myself, i know computers can control a remote buggy on Mars, so why, with that much ability can't they tell me why i keep getting a device driver error, #744. On the RAS error code list, #744 is: "Cannot use the IPX net number assigned by the remote server. Check the event log"

This problem occurs everytime we reboot, hence the reason for this thread.

If "JOSHUA" was accessible, he'd help me out. Don't want "HAL", he can be nasty.

Ah well, onto the next brainwave.

I have other questions, but they are destined for a different section. (keeps everybody amused, i'm sure).

Mmmmm, yeah. Sally did a check disk with NDD and it found 2 problems then crashed. It did reboot immediately without neutralising the BIOS. In the past a reboot would show "No HDD present". It did however fix the 2 problems before rebooting itself after diskcheck. A follow up diskcheck was done and NO errors were found.

An updated chipset was finally located and downloaded. So far, so good.

Application event viewer shows the last error to be 11:27am, while diskdoctor was doing it's thing.

The errors found at that time were: "Deleting index entry all[1].css in index $130 of file 12343" and "Deleting index entry ALL_1_~1.CSS in index $130 of file 12343"

Maybe someone could enlighten us as too whether these errors were significant???

She then went hunting for this elusive driver that seems to be causing us some dramas.......Found a beaut little program that can read all the drivers on the computer for every bit of hardware installed. Isolated the non MS drivers out from the rest and as there were only a few Manufacturers, went to their site to see if there were updated drivers available.........Yeehar!!! went up the cry.......she found that the P4 3.2 proc had an updated chipset. Loaded them up and restarted.

The system hasn't had a event error since........Does this mean she may have fixed it.........System appears to be working fine.......wont know until the next crash if the problem has finally been corrected.

System errors in event viewer indicate a variety of them. System, DHCP, NTFS, and a whole heap of yellow warning triangles. These were created at the time it crashed on sally @ 11:55pm last night. Sally left the puter switched off til this morning. Since then it has only stopped once, when the diskcheck caused it.

I truly believe we are FINALLY on a winner for a change. I wasn't game to make any comments untill it had run for a bit longer.

I should really be stating these facts/comments in our other thread as they are more relevant for it.

Might have a look and see if it can be cut/pasted into it. Saves a lot of typing, lol.
