I have a 2500 barton @ 2GHz is it worth it to go to a amd64 3200+ orgive it some more time till the socket change happens? Would I notice much of a difference in speed?

It depends on what you need if for Bud. If you're comparing a 3200+ with another 3200+ new socket for folding then why wait? They will probably both perform the same.

To sum up Athlon 64 3200+ in a nutshell.

    Not really no.

The difference is marginal, it's nice to have but only if you hunger for the latest and greatest.. and you have to be prepared for some teething troubles until you have it bedded in right.

Id say wait for the next generation. I don't regret switching but (and it's a big ol' but) unless you are having performance issues, switching to A64 754 (not FX) isn't really worth the upgrade for the little extra boost you get.

I'd say wait until it matures a little unless you have some cash to burn. It simply costs too much for what you get to purchase the best out there. Buy a half generation behind for the better deals.

3200+ speeds are still pretty decent. Coupled with great ram @ low timings and a good video card, you can do just about anything you want. That's really the core question... "What do I want to do with my PC". Heavy CPU stuff goes to Intel. AMD is sort of the jack-of-all-trades and then excelling in various other things. IMO, versatility is king. Being able to do a lot of stuff well makes or breaks a buying decision for me (For core components anyway), which is why I chose AMD in the end. The overclockability of a good Barton was just icing on the cake :D

I would jump in Barton range up to max available, but as others have said, the amd64 is not mature yet. Actually, I would wait a month or two first before doing either-- prices on the higher end Bartons will drop some, just as the Barton 2500+'s did, as the motherboards for the FX series get more mature. I know a Barton rocks for folding, a faster Barton will rock better. But, unless you have a use for the box other than just folding, would hang tight myself, right where you are at-- for at least thirty days.

I'm not regretting going for the A64 early. Motherboard and stuff is perfectly stable, and while I'm not seeing a 30% gain in performance that was talked about elsewhere, I am seeing 15-20% in newer games. I didn't make a big jump... Daedalus in my sig was perfectly capable... but I do feel a difference, though windows isn't quite as responsive, probably due to the lack of HT in the A64.
