Virus that causes thrashing?

I have a Seagate Barraccuda 7200 ATA and shortly after I got it, it makes these grinding thrashing sounds. Occasionally I will get the random reboot. Memtest says I am fine (although I know that my PC2100 is a bit shy for my 2500+ and NF7). I have gotten sporattic info here about possible fixes and none seem to help. I did some investigation with disk investagator and found a command to reboot the system contained within random symbols designating packets of info on the drive. If I were to format the drive, would it get rid of this? Also, is there anything else I could do besides formating? Anybody?

I think you should do a quick format and see if it works. If not that do a full and try it on another pc.

Any other alternatives? I have run a number of anitviruses and they all come back with no issues. SMART says disk is healthy, although I have only been able to push it through a defrag once but most times running a diagnostic, it will just stop for no apparent reason. Seems rather strange to me but I thought you all might have some input in the matter. I will have to back everything up to DVD I suppose, then format, does that command line sound like a virus or am I just paranoid? It says "A DISK READ ERROR OCCURRED...NTLDR IS MISSING...NTLDR IS COMPRESSED...PRESS CNTL+ALT+DEL TO RESTART" Seems rather strange to me but I thought you all might have some input in the matter. Could that be a virus? Is that why I am getting random reboots? COuld that be a symptom or maybe even the cause of the sounds coming from this two month old drive?

Get SeaTools from seagate's website and see what that says.

Already did that, it says the drive is fine. System Mechanic, Panda AV, and System Suite all say the same thing but when going through some of their diagnostics, they stop for no reason, like they hit a bump or something. What is NLTDR and how can I replace or repair it on a drive?
