So I got my ps2 here and it has sh*t the bed. Like many others out there, i get the disk read errors and I wanna play some games!!!! I already took it apart and tried fixing it according to what this said: http://www.arstechnica.com/reviews/003/gaming/ps2/ps2-1.html
That didnt work. Anybody here have this problem and fixed it?

BTW, warranty is long gone so I might as well try to fix it.

Rent one from blockbuster, then return your old one in their case, saying that it didn't work, and you want your money back.

CBDroege, wouldn't that be.... immoral? lol Moral and Blockbuster don't mix, I still can't believe my parents threw their Blockbuster cards in those guys faces the way they did.... but that, my friends, is another story :D

Blockbuster screwed my family over a long time ago saying we didn't return some stuff when we did. Screw 'em back for me, fudgam :D

By the way, were there any warning signs before your PS2 started acting up? Mine is getting old and a little quirky, but no actual error messages yet.

If there were any, I didnt notice it. I dont think there is. They are famous for sh*tting the bed. Pretty much, if it hasnt happened to yours...it will eventually.
So...noone here has ever fixed their ps2?

Nope, same thing happened to mine, so I called the Sony help people. They told me that this 'just happens' to PS2s eventually, and that I was screwed...

You already know what my eventual solution was...

I haven't turned my PS2 off in probably 2 months. I just keep GTA: Vice City on pause. :) I think I've played about 30 minutes worth of that game in the last 2 months, but I can't stand waiting for the system to boot up and load the game. Want a pain! ;D

If you can show me how, I will :)
Seriously, I would even fold under your username if you can show me how (w/out it costing me tons of time or a good chunk of change.)

Does this happen with every game you try? Try playing DVDs and CDs as well. If any of those play, it's not the lens, but somehting much worse. Post what happens after your test.

a2j, you could buy that linux kit for the ps2 and then fold on that. well probably not since i don't think there's a folding client for the ps2 architecture.

ok, I have another PS2 problem. In the middle of playing NBA Live... horn sounds, period ends... screen starts to pan-out for arial shot... system freezes, shuts down, 15 minutes later. It will not reboot or load, nor will the disc tray open... disc is still inside. Any ideas how to repair or should I just replace it. Sony will fix it for $100. Also, I do have an extended warrenty that will allow me to exchange it... no charge.

Ummmm...PS-2 boxes have serial numbers. Do you think they don't check them?

Please let's not be advocating something unethical like that in these forums :)

I was able to fix my ps2. I adjusted the distance the laser/lens was raised. My warranty was up, so I didnt care about opening it up.

Funny. My PS2 is the first-run model, and it still works.

Just buy a CD\DVD lens Cleaner and she'll be like new again. I worked for me when me when mine got slower than an OAP wit no legs.
