Basic answer, if HD works, is not HD, most likely.

That leaves video card and RAM and motherboard and CPU and Power Supply to look at(which is a chip, these days). I see I need to publish a troubleshoot tree for enthusiast level folks....

Please do tell more about what the 'puter does and what it does not like to do, for starters, might as well start here. Does monitor work??? If yes, video card is not totally dead if box is plugged in.

Is box dusty inside??? Is there a big fan on a pretty big lump of metal fastened down to motherboard??? If yes, what does taking an air can and blowing out the dust in fins (open air grooves between the parts of metal thing that sticks up under fan really)and out of grooves and out from under fan do??? If 'puter than works, was overheating CPU that you rescued in time maybe.

If HD works in other computer, but computer will not do anything AT ALL (no noises, no nothing) with HD in, probably a thing called a power supply is least partly at fault. Power supply is big metal box inside bigger computer box. Power up for about 30 seconds, hold hand about an inch from the back of computer where littler box is, see if you feel air blowing. If not, replace power supply or get a technician to see if it is repairable (most techs just replace power supply at this point unless it is under warranty or computer has a repair and service agreement thta is still good in which case they call the OEM and have them decide what to do.).

    Let's START there....
