Is your case "thermally advantaged?"
This is Intel's way of not saying the PressHot is too hot for older cases.
Thermally advantaged chassis: A chassis that has been designed to meet the required thermal specification of a 38oC fan inlet temperature for the Intel® Pentium® 4 processor Extreme Edition, or Intel® Pentium® 4 processors based on 90nm
A thermally advantaged chassis can be recognized by a hollow tube attached to the side panel called a chassis air guide which has flared ends.

So now the Athlons are not only running faster, but cooler too? LOL, how the roles have switched. I love my Athlon 64! :D
  • edited February 2004
The Athlons aren't running faster...more efficiently is the proper term. If Intel had not made their pipelines as long as they did they'd be running more efficiently and cooler too.
I personally like contrasts so I'm not worried about it.

and what's sad is the mainstream media will pick this story up and hail it as a new Intel accomplishment. sad....

i doubt it, what normal american would even know what we was going on if someone said something about intel's new cooling requirements for the next gen pentium

TheBaron has it - 99% of computer users think the case is called the "hard drive" and that the monitor is the "CPU"... They have NO CLUE as to what a processor is or that it even generates heat.

You always have to put news like this into THAT perspective... And then do a

my point is because Intel will say they invented it, they will be hailed as "the great ones" once more. they suck

...And the uninformed masses all hail intel,intel...

I look at how they perpetuated the megahertz myth and can't help thinking it has got to be one of the most successful perceptive manipulation done by a single entity on a massive scale. The other one of course is how the devil tricked man into thinking he doesn't exist ;).

Lol....prime....my sis just got a new tablet pc from her work. Actual Conversation betwixed her and I.

Sis: Hey, how much ram is typically in a laptop?
Me: Well, anywhere from 128 to 512 is pretty standard. There are exceptions though.
Sis: Well how much does your computer downstairs have?
    Me: 512mb
    Sis: My computers better!!!
    Me: Why?
    Sis: Its got 40 giga-megs.
    Me: Ahhhh-hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahahahah

Thermally Advantaged chassis..... sigh..... Judas f'ing Priest... quit hiding from it and just call everything else Thermally Challenged or Thermally Retarded...

As if they're going to hurt the feelings of my Thermally Retarded Enlight case

Speaking of retarded, they now have a direct line for dust from the outside right to the HS fins... it doesn't appear that they bothered to specify any type of filter. I just know I have to disassemble and clean my Alpha every 3 months or I have problems... oh well, we'll have a high initial failure rate until someone figures this out, and then everyone will have to upgrade to Thermally Advantaged II... :shakehead

    What?

    You're kidding, right?

If my monitor and my CPU aren't the same thing then I've been spending too much money for my 17" Athlon XP-M Non-Interlaced 2500+.

Heat? Nah, you're crazy! My CPUMonitor is cold.

About the only thing that would redeem Intel at least slightly in my eyes now would be a Dothan processor that is faster and colder than Banias at the same clock speeds.

Just remember this thread when the Prescott's hit 4Ghz. Don't forget about the 90nm process. Not to take anything away from AMD, they build excellent products, but to underestimate Intel, they've been around the block a few times. On the 90nm process they can build roughly 30% more procs with the same amount of silicon as the Northwoods. Intel could make things difficult on AMD should they decide to put pricing lower than AMD, and still make more money per CPU. Just my two cents (whacks hornets nest with stick).

Shrug. AMD doesn't appear to be having any trouble with their SOI process since they're projecting 90nm Athlon64's and Opterons in what, 2-6 months? How fast can Intel scale the Prescotts without any chipset and motherboard support outside overdesigned Northwood motherboards? Pushing a new case spec (BTX) isn't likely to find many takers for their motherboards even when they do get chipsets. If DDR-II doesn't yield significant performance gains over normal DDR, Intel will have pulled another Rambus. With Prescotts this hot, I can see the Dells exploding now...

I was kinda hoping Prescott would learn from Banias, but alas this is not the case. I would pay money for a desktop Pentium M board and a hyperthreading Pentium M, but I will not pay money for a processor that resembles Chernobyl in its thermal characteristics.

AMD has processors AND core logic NOW, a winning combination. I'm predicting Intel's going to get trashed this year, but will probably have enough money at the end to pull its head out of its butt and design decent desktop products in the next two years.

AMD will have one 90nm fab in 2-6 months, Intel currently has three. Prescotts will hit 4 Ghz on 875 chipset (within 6 months) I think all of this is moot though. I'm curious to see what happens in 12 - 16 months. That's when it's really going to get interesting. Intel will be releasing (hypothetically) Tejas with a new chipset supporting PCI express, PCI express for graphics, DDRII and the new BTX format. I'm guessing Intel will wait till then for 64 bit also. Curious how Microsoft is dragging it's heels on it's 64 bit OS. And definitely AMD will have it's pencil razor sharp at the same time. I digress, this thread is getting way off topic. I'm just glad my current setup still flies.

    P.S. AMD 4th quarter earnings 2003 - 1.2 billion
Intel 4th quarter earnings 2003 - 8.74 billion (82% market share) they'll have enough to "survive"

Intel is the only company to go nuclear after a die-shrink.
Usually it goes the other way, size down = temp down.
    But not with PresHot.

    Talk about Thermally Disadvantaged. :smokin:
Well, their marketing geniuses keep pushing the megahertz pitch, they're bound to go thermo-nuclear down the road where they'd require a mini-nuclear plant inside each pc case that says Intel Inside.

And that is just for the power.
You'll need giant cooling towers to cool the cpu and eh.. something a lot better than copper to cunduct the heat.
Copper will melt in a nuclear setup.

Check out the "list" of thermally advantaged cases. I couldn't believe it Antec now has labelled their run of the mill case as "thermally advantaged" right on their website, follow the link. Wonder if they are going to cost more now. Also the interesting item I like to refer to as a bog horn is no where to be seen on the antec case. How utterly embarassing, does anyone at Intel other than the marketing department look at the website. My Lian Li PC70 is hiding under my desk in shame as it has discovered it is thermally disadvantaged as it is not on the list.

The Antec Plus1080-AMG indeed has a hole in the side.

The Chenbro PC611xx has one as well:

The Antec case hole is an AGP fan hole. Notice the lower location on the side of the case. It lines up with the AGP slot, not the CPU and there is no duct, I've built a bunch of systems in those cases. If all you need to have a " thermally advantaged case" is an AGP blowhole then whew, I'm OK. I was a little worried there. :p
