Does Windows Update work for anyone else? YES or NO? :)

That's a good question, though I see no reason for it to work, considering the OS hasn't even been released yet.

Yes it works but.. you have to enable auto updates for it to work. Otherwise you get errors.

No reason for it to work Spinner? Huh?

We are testing a beta to help FIND problems... And it's a chance for MS to fix those probs and get them tested BEFORE the actual release. And they fix the probs supposedly and supply the patchs to ya through windows update. What purpose would there be for MS in testing a beta if they were not trying to actually fix the product also?

I just got an AMD Athlon 6 @ 3200+ and MB is due in 4-26-04. I have the Windows XO 64-bit Evaluation LKit on Cd - the one that Expires after 360 days. I asked about the options after the 360 day period -- I specifically wanted to know what the cost of the final version would be. The rely surprised me, the responder says they will NOT sell the OS -- it will only be available OEM.

What is with that? What do we do with our self-built systems! Run Linux?

I am pasting the response below less identifying info:

I understand you have a 64 bit trial version of Windows XP, I would like to take this time to reiterate my previous response. Microsoft does not sell, nor do we have plans to sell 64 bit retail copies of Windows XP. We can not provide you with a price quote because there will not be one. The "final" product is already available in OEM format and at this time, there are no plans to offer Windows XP-64 bit any other way.

For your convenience, I am adding the link with information on how to purchase 64 bit OEM versions of Windows XP below.

    http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/64bit/howtobuy/default.asp

I am also including a link to an FAQ which also states that the 64 bit version of Windows XP will not be able for retail purchase and will only be available through OEM's.

    http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/64bit/evaluation/faq.asp

I hope you find this information helpful in clearing up any confusion you may have had about the 64 bit version of Windows XP.

What do you all plan to do for an OS? Is this your understanding? Am I missing something?

If this is the case, all those of us who build their own PC's will have difficulty obtaining Microsoft 64 bit OS.

Good grief the dumb f*ck. He didnt link you with a amd_64 bit version. Thats a differant 64bit version only for Itaniums in his link and they sell about 100 of those a month so its obvious why that product won't go retail. They cpu's used to cost a couple grand a pop. And they don't run 32bit normal software. It had to be Itanium only 64bit software.

The amd64 also runs normal 32bit software. Its mainstream and the cpu's are a couple huindred bucks to start.

And I didn't mean the poster... I was referring to the monkey dressed up in a suit from microsuxs that sent him the email and link. I hope it didn't appear otherwise.

I could not believe what I was reading. Why test market a Beta product and then dead-end it and not allow the end-user to purchase it?

But thats not the AMD64bit version. There is no market for the Itanium version. They are very expensive and don't run any non itanium software. Microsuxs would pay more for support costs then they would ever make in sales. The itanium is a specialized product that is sold 98 percent of its very very limited sales into servers. Its been a horrible dissaster for Intel. There is almoist no software for it other then stuff like big database server stuff like Oracle etc.... And if your spending 20 grand on a database server including software licences etc... Its going onto win2k or win2k3 or Linux not XP.

What a bunch of nitwits on that design team... Lets see... They dominated the OS market for the last 20+ years with a ton of differant OS versions and when the design team for each new OS went to work tehy could fit teh few absolute requirements onto one single 3x5 inch note card...... "It has to run the 500 gazillion differant software versions already produced for my last OS in some form. And somehow these nimrods decided instead to build a very VERY expensive cpu (used to cost a couple grand a pop) that didn't run any software except stuff ported to it.

So .... You had a machine with no software.... that cost a ton... making it almost non-sellable except to very specific markets.

If they had made the Itanium capable of running 32bit windows software it would of sold 1000 times more copies a month even being very pricey.

    To the question, "run Linux?"

Why not try it??? Try a kernel 2.6.3-7 or greater version and try KDE in it, KDE 3.2 specifically. Mandrake 10 Discovery should be a viable option for your non-Itanium 64bit box. Stock, it is intended for i686 and up, minimum gen is gen 6 processors. SuSE 9.1 has the same kernel set, basically, but Mandrake first had a working 64bit specific subversion if you want one of those, and Mandrake still is updating it. You can get a live CD from LinuxCentral of Mandrake, and a Mandrake Discovery preburned ISO set for about $12.00 shipped.

Hi im new here, so if you are saying that we are testers for this software as we are does that mean Microsoft can log into our computers and check out what we have and what we are doing, so they like full access to our computers, or dont they get notified about this sorto of thing...like for example if someone had illigal software installed on their system would they get notified of this or would they be able to check it out?

No it does not mean that. But I turn off remote aceess and get rid of their hidden users anyway. Suggest you do also for many reasons.

Go scarf a copy of the M-S-Antispy software. It has many nice tweaks and should be the first thing you install after putting XP on anyway. You turn of error reporting for XP and Office XP etc...
