Abit Ai7 - Hissing???

edited February 2004 in Hardware
I have a ABIT AI7 motherboard with 3.2 ghz, EVGA GeFroce FX5900 512 RAM... But the problem i get is a hissing noises coming from somewhere on the motherboard when i do CPU intensive things, but especially when i scroll in IE or just a word document. I would not care about it but i can hear it in my hear phones and it is driving me crazy. I have tried another sound card(im using the integrated one - same problem) and updating video drivers, no help... Any suggestions?

Also, and i dont know if this is in any way related, when i do CPU intensive things and write or read from the HDD the back light on the digital thermometer fades in and out and some times all the way off... Could this all be a power problem?

I have checked out the ABIT forums few other people have the problem but have not been able to fix, and the tech support at ABIT just thinks im crazy.

What type of power supply do you have? It sounds like you are drawing lots of power if the lcd backlight goes dim in cpu intesive tasks, but it could also be a faulty temp probe. Is the power for the temp unit plugged into the same molex connector as your harddrive? If so, this could be the reason for the dimming effect. Try plugging the temp thing into an open molex connector or at least one that is not hooked up to hdd or video card.

How about speakers/headphones? Have you tried your speakers/headphones on another sysytem? I don't think it is the AI7, because i have one and no such hissing noise can be found. I did however originally have some trouble with my speakers, so that is the first thing i would think. But i had no sound at all---not a hissing noise. Anyway, i needed a new pair of speakers to fix my problem b/c my old ones were flaky.

Could you possibly describe the hissing noise more? Could be a dying fan---the abit northbridge fans are notoriously weak and prone to failure. But i think that would be more of a whirring than a hissing......

I have a 350 watt powersupply but its a pretty generic brand, i hear that u dont always get what u pay for with power supplys.

I have tried other speakers/headphones, reinstalling windows, switching pretty much every companant i can but still hear it. I have even run it with no fans connected so i know its not the fans.

The sound sounds like a static clicking or hissing, and i seem to hear it the most when i scroll in something like a web browser but i also hear it in games when the in game music is low(other wise its drown out)

Im going to try and get another power supply and try that other wise do u think i should just return it, im all out of idea

    thanks for the help

try a different mouse. or update mouse/keyboard drivers. if you have a microsoft, the intellipoint/type 5.0s are out.

As for power supplies, i would get an antec, enermax, thermaltake, etc...i have a 350watt antec smart blue and it is rock solid.
