black & white only in tv-out mode

I am trying t use the tv-out feature of my radeon 9600pro. I have an s-video to composite video adapter and then composite video to my 27" sony trinitron. I have the newest 4.2 cat's, but the display is only in black & white. I hooked it up to a monitor to test the card and it is full-color on the monitor, just not the tv. I have tried the tv as both primary and secondary monitors, but it doesn't matter. I had an fx5200 hooked up the same way without any problems (i.e., full color!)

Any suggestions or ideas?

Anybody else having trouble with the tv out of 9600 series?

    This site has a lot of ideas, though not all of them worked for everybody. Start about 4-5 posts down.

    Good Luck! :type:

    another thing you might want to check is your s-video cable, svideo is 2 signals, chroma and luminance, ive had many cables break just the chroma path and so all you get is a black and white image, which is the luminance value ... check with another cable if you have one...

    Thanks for the suggestions....I tried most, if not all, of the things suggested by that link...I have also tried every possible combination of wires that i own. S-video, composite, multiple s-video to composite adapters, etc....still no luck.

    I also don't think my s-video cable is broken b/c the same one works fine from a geforce fx5200 to the same tv. But thanks for the info...i had no idea that is how s-video is set up. cool!

    Well, i went to Best Buy and bought a $30 Monster S-video cable. Guess what --- it works!!!!!!!!!

    My 9600pro apparently wants only the best........kinda sucks since my fx5200 was happy with a $3.00 radio shack s-video cable :wtf:

    well lets put 2 and 2 together here

    radioshack = crap ... fx5200 = crap ... fx5200 + radioshack = 2*crap
    9600pro = not crap ... 9600pro + radioshack = not crap + crap = 0

    see now that just doesn't make any sense at all, of COURSE you needed a non radioshack cable :)

    i should have done that 'crap' math earlier and i wouldn't have had this problem.....

    I think that's crap squared, not X2.

    The overall theory is sound. :bigggrin:

    I just wanted to post the solution I came across to this problem I had with my IGP 320M Mobility S-video output. I tried everything drivers, cords, compaq support, read many forums and did't find a solution. I was about to giveup and remembered one thing I had read that I didn't try yet. You must have the cablehooked up to the card AND the TV BEFORE booting up. If you boot up then hook up the cable you will get B&W no matter what you do. I'm not sure where I read this solution, but I figured I'd post it around in case anyone is in the same boat as me and can't find a solution (evidently even Compaq/ HP don't know this solution as they said output is monochrome through s-video ). I hope this helps someone out.

    I may have spoken too soon. My color comes and goes, guess maybe its just that its a crap card. Time for a new laptop
