Start Windows XP Without Waiting for Welcome

You know that annoying login window where you have to click your name to get your settings loaded for desktop. If you have your pc set with only one person account it still goes to the welcome window as MS calls it. Well, You can get rid of that process and go straight to desktop if you have only one account on your pc. Anyway here's the deal on it--
To log on to Windows XP without going through the Welcome screen, you must have exactly one user account defined and you must have the Guest account turned off. That's the arrangement you had originally. A recent Windows XP update screws up this plan by adding a virtual user called ASP.NET, which isn't useful unless you're a programmer. Assuming you're not, just delete it.
Of course, subsequent Windows updates are likely to bring back that unwanted account. For a more permanent solution, download TweakUI from microsoft power toys. Install and launch TweakUI; unlike earlier versions, the utility launches from the Start menu rather than the Control Panel. Double-click on the Logon item to open it and then click on Autologon. Check the box titled Log on automatically at system startup, enter your user name that comes up on the welcome screen and password if you have one, if not don't put one in, and click on OK. Now TweakUI will log you on using your user name and password even if more than one account exists.

Hope this helps someone out.

Thanks Hawk. My strategy was to not do windows updates :wtf: since I really don't need them on my 2 gig hard drives for the folding farm nodes. I've always loved tweak ui. They have provided some great features in the past. You can do a lot between tweak ui and powertoys for windows. I'll keep that in mind if I decide to do windows updates on my folding farm nodes (which I doubt I will since it'll become lengthy updating more than five nodes). You da man. :Rocker:

The update in question I believe is one of the .NET service packs. Deleting that account is one of the first things I do upon setting up a fresh install.
