diminishing 3dmark03 scores!

Last week I bought an oem sapphire radeon 9800pro from newegg ($212). I installed the card about 6 days ago. Everything seemed great at first. So right after I installed the card, I ran 3dmark03 with my 9800pro at stock speeds, and it scored a 5802. So I am pretty happy, i figure with a mild o/c i can easily break 6000.

So i forget about the card for a few days, and I don't do any benchmarking for like 3-4 days. Yesterday i decide it is time to tweak my 9800pro and break 6000. I run 3dmark03 at stock 9800pro speeds and i score a 5673. I think this is strange, so i run all my spyware detection utilities, regmechanic, and then reboot. 3dmark03 score = 5607. Now i am starting to get mad :mad: Why is my 3dmark03 score dropping everytime i run it? I just ran it this morning and it scored 5584.

In an attempt to remedy the situation, or at least score back around 5800, i decide to do a mild oc of the 9800pro to 405/351. Guess what? Artifacts all over, especially in the nature test. So i cancel and set it to 399/351. More artifacts! :scratch: After trying almost evey setting with artifacts, the only stable oc i can get is barely over stock at 384/344. Any guesses as to my oc'ed 3dmark03 score? A dismal 5598. WTF?!?!?!?!??!!?!?!?! So i wait about 15 minutes and ran it again.......5548, 10 minutes later = 5496. Now i am pissed! :rant:

I am beginning to think that somebody else RMA'd this card after they toasted it. Any thoughts, comments, or suggestions?

    I just did the ol' uninstall/reinstall of 3dmark03, spyware removal, regmechanic again. I ran it at stock speeds and i am getting slight artifacts in 2-3 of the tests....final score = 5563.

    Up a little but still not right.......Should i RMA?

    Thanks for the advice! I am going to try the 9800pro in another machine first and see if the same thing happens. If I am still getting artifacts, then I am definitly going to RMA it ASAP.

    Anybody else have issues with their 9800pro out of the box? I am not sure if i should exchange it for another 9800pro or something else though....

    with the problems you're having im pretty sure that can only be attributed to a dying video card (im having a similar problem, which im pretty sure has the same culprit, only its not as severe and i dont want to have to rma my AIW :( )

    I tried my 9800pro in my 'old' p4 1.5ghz. Pretty much same problems....I can't oc more than 5mhz on either the core or mem. It has samsung memory so it should be able to oc easily, but no such luck. The artifacting seems to be getting worse at stock speeds also.

    It is currently packaged and ready to go back to Newegg. Hopefully my replacement 9800pro won't suffer the same problems.

    Anybody else have trouble with their OEM Sapphire Radeon 9800pro?

    Did you got trick by recent 9800Pro marketing gimicks (lower pipelines but advertise as higher)?
