I would definetly get the 2 raptors, what ever else you choose depends on which you need more.

I wouldn't want to run 36GB raptors in my machine because they sound like jet engines, the really tinny whiny kind. The 72GB raptors have fluid dynamic bearings and are normal-sounding, but a 10,000 RPM ball bearing drive is out of the question for me.

i have some raptors and truthfully they arent worth the money get the bigger HD's with some ram that will increase the speed more than the raptors

I have 2 raptors on a RAID-0 array, and honestly, they're fast, quiet and overall great drives. I've not heard the high pitch whirring that many say they have experienced. I really like them.

My raptors make no more noise than my PATA Maxtor or Western Digital. With all of my case fans, I can't hear any of my drives anyway. 2 Raptors in Raid 0 will kick any other SATA or PATA drive in the nuts.

The file server, if you have an active use file serving setup, will want the bigger drive.

Raptors are noisier but faster, but the file server can store all your archives and less often used files. Keep only the most often used ones on the main box. UNLESS you are going to FTP serve, that is, to others. Then, for security, you will want more space on your main box, and your server not often connected directly and easily exploitably to main box if it is serving over web also. Too dang many trojans unless your server is secured massively, to have a connect direct from it to a Widnwos box that could be used for an intrusion pipe. If server is local only, think size on server, if feeding, limit connect to main box and put more storage on main box. At the monent, not knowing and assuming mostly local use, would say to put the 200 on the server or mroe space, and then stick smaller HDs on the main box and backup to server as well as use it for archive or DB storage or back files storage. Best to not have backups on same mech at all, and to not 100% count on RAID as average lifetime for HDs to last is not always anywhere near true for any two HDs. MTBF is an average, and is in drive running hours.

I've got 2 raptors and they run fine. My maxtors were louder by far. I'm with you Madball- 5-80mm's & 2 PS fans & radeon vga fan. Only sound I ever hear from my raptors is a slight ticking when the HD is running hard on a program. I love the SATA drives. Gnome, If you want to get rid of those 2 raptors you have let me know. I've got to build inlaws a new pc and I already have some parts. Need Case, Hd's, V92 modem.
