I'm using an SMC barricade router and whenever I try to send files through
Windows Messenger, it fails to connect to the other user's computer. What
must I do to enable sending ? Where must I go (special app., client filter...)
and what must I type for ports (trigger and public) to get it working ? Thx!

Use MSN messenger not Windows Messenger.

Upgrading to MSN messenger won't help with my NAT device. If it does, how?

Not sure but I remove Windows Messenger and use MSN Messenger.

I have had problems sending files thru IM programs before because of the firewall in the router. I know I have done it with MSN Messenger tho.

Windows Messenger is only for communicating locally. It was designed for things like an administrator alerting everyone on a LAN that the server would be down for maintenance.

MSN Messenger is not an "upgrade", it is a totally different critter. Its main purpose in life is for communicating outside your LAN.

Windows Messenger can be configured to send outside messages (spammers have found it useful...) but you'll be fighting your firewall the whole way. MSN Messenger already uses the correct ports to avoid a setup hassle. :smiles:

I configured the Barricade. Works now... I just had the wrong trigger port.
I can send files from my Windows Messenger now. Thank you for the help!

prof: Windows messenger and MSN Messenger are basicaly the same thing. Its the Messenger service that admins use across the network.

You are right. I was referring to the Messenger service. Too bad I didn't actually use the word service... :banghead:

It was clear in my own mind, even if I didn't express it very well. :zombie:

In my experience MSN Messenger is actually much more advanced with things like NAT traversal and firewalls (v6.1). That is, in comparison to Windows Messenger 4.7. Version 5 (which isn't as of yet available through Windows Update) is more on par. However functions like file transfers and video conferencing etc etc have only recently started to really cope with things like ICS etc. 6 or so month ago things were a lot harder to do. Though admittedly there are still a few bugs to be worked out.
