Well i've got a strange problem. A text document containg stuff that i'll be getting for my next comp is warped somehow. The first part says

ãÖHUܱ«ÆeGrÏ?#t»
Økn?A¯*Áìq`HÁ Æ*1Ó?d?7:£&ÆRøO?Ë;ðS;?ÒuÒ?,ÚÏgKNÇD@;oq{?ñ Þ?9fdâPðHZ*?¾8Ó% ?&²D»zipó}?BAr¶\Ó»ÓPÈÊaÀ(

How could this have happen and how do i fix it. Since it mostly a purchase list i thing i remember what was on it and can find the items again but i hope i don't have to. The text that was in the document said something like

FSP 350W 120mm fan <20dB 649
arctic silver 5 95

and so on. The prices are in swedish kronor. This document was located on a cd that had been formated using roxio drag to disc. I normaly don't use it but needed a place to store stuff off my harddrive incase of failure. Can heat have caused this. My case does get quite warm. I ran norton but found nothing so i don't think it was a virus. I also lost a part at the end of another document. I don't know what caused it but i have restored it since i knew what it said.

Please help me.

Have no other comp. Any ideas what could hace caused this. This kind of text only appears if you open image or dll files (i've tried that in the past for strange reasons) but not text.

Sounds like a corrupt font. Copy the document (for safety) and change it to a different font. If that works, use TweakUI's font repair tool.

I tried repairing the font folder but that didn't work. I'll attach the file.

    Try Hackman Hex Editor.

edit: I can't make odds and ends of it, even in hex mode. I think it's corrupt.

Ok i got on. What do i do know. It doesn't look any better in hex.

Well, compare the hex output of this file with a working txt file. You'll notice a lot of differences in the hex layout.

I see what you mean. Does that mean i'm screwed or is there some way to restore the text. Also what caused this. I would really like to know that so it doesn't happen again.

What office suite or word processor do you use?? The font for teh word processor might be itself corrupt-- if so, then when you fix that and reopen the doc, the restored font should work. BTW, if this is OpenOffice, there is another way to get the text back.... In OOo.org, docs are actually archives. take teh archive, open it (gunzip in Linux, PicoZip or WinZip in Windows). The file that is named contents with some extension after that is what you want, you can get a corrupt archive and sitll have a contents file that is valid, and if you open the textr file that the contents file is and then edit and save again as an OOo file you can then have your doc back.

To an English Language box, or XP set up multilingual in English instead of the native country language settings, a Swedish or Danish font would look like hex-- ASCII is US, and the font char positions in other countries do not correspond to English character positions. Box would have to have Swedish support running is this is from Sweden, Danish if from Denmark, to have an output from a foreign language box look right if the WP was done in that language. If file can be read, probably is a valid file in large part, but it looks like a cross-linked file position entry pair in TOC is what is wrong. Edn of one file was lost, possibly the beginning of the file that is junk is missing font spec headers. Any way to get original file as type it was saved as, and info as to what software was used and what language was used to make it????

I used wordpad to create and edit the file. The text was names in both english and swedish of hardware i'm planning on getting plus some comments. Ive got other files (apps, music, pics, documents) on the disc and they work. Haven't tried all of them though.

Looks like it's time to reinstall word and see what happens.

In that case and since i have restored my shopping list in another file the only question left is: How did this happen and what can i do to make sure that it doesn't happen again. I'll check some more files on that cd to see if there're more broken ones.

Is the disc closed? Does Roxio have its own viewer or something?

    ...grasping straws...

I don't know if it's closed since it's a special formated disc. It's a ordinary cd-rw that has been used before with no problems. Drag to disc is the program used so i guess it can be considered a viewer even though when i browse the files i use standard folders.

I have moved all files from the disc to my harddrive and opened several but found no errors, so whatever happened doesn't seem to have corrupted the whole disc. Even in the same directory i had 2 text documents that are ok so i'm really puzzled as to what it can be. :scrathhead:
