The crooks in The Bayou State better watch out - this guy is relentless. He's a nice guy, though. He'll even give you the shirt off his back.

Congrats on 15K, KingFish!

Way to go KingFish. Great to see so many people doing so well.

Thanks Mr. Dragon. I had to add production out of self defense. Dancer is a monster at folding.

Congrats KingFish! Very impressive production. If you can get pics of your farm, i'd ike to see them.. maybe salivate a lil.

Way to fold, KingFish! You are coming on strong, I see!

Farming is a blast, but can get expensive in the summer though, so be prepared for sticker shock when the summer electric bills come in. I had to buy a window ac for my computer room last year due to all the heat my 6 computers in the room (6 AMD proc and 2 P4 procs) can put out.
  • edited March 2004
I've already noticed the temp increase. I have a total of 8 computers in that one room and I'm going to put in a room a/c there as well. Why couldn't I have added the other computers at the beginning of winter?

Nice going, maybe one day I'll get a mini farm going.

Here is a small pic of the farm so far with four nodes. It's raw and open but is quite effective and dirt cheap for what I get out of it. I also have four other computers in the same room but they are spread out. The plastic shelf is stackable so I can add another level for just three dollars more when I plan to expand. I manage everything via pcanywhere so I don't need a monitor or keyboard and takes out the expense of a kvm. Once I get it set up I simply plunk it down there and only reboot the nodes from time to time and watch the points pile up. It is a heat machine too. It's not much to salivate over at this time.

I've never seen a ghetto folding farm before.. I think I just did?! I had these visions of strack identical towers ensconced in their own galvanized shelving... LOL

Simple yet effective... Much like your night stick!

Looks like you're off to a great start. How many comps do you plan to eventually end up with?

Here are some other folks with the same idea.

EDIT: This guy found a way to beat the heat - the attic!

Thanks Prof, those are some wild setups. Unfortunately, I need to stick to enclosed towers, if I set up a farm using stacks.. the cat would eventually electrocute himself.

I plan on ten or so nodes. Where that space is I can, in theory, put 16 nodes. I doubt if I would go that high due to electricity. I'm working on a little stealth project that may put me up to 16 though. Still a long shot at this point

prof: Seems to me that attic would be too warm for new computers and possibly cause them to overheat.

One awy to gain a similar effect, though, would be to inclose the case housing the farm and have an exhaust tube flow into the attic. There could be a few intake fans to bring in A/C'd air to keep things cool, and all the heat would escape into that attic.

    10? You evil man! ;D

What the specs of the four nodes now? What are the specs of the systems you're wanting to add?

After I posted the pic, that occurred to me, too. Maybe someone like keto ("just south of the arctic circle") could get away with it. Your idea is a good one. When I was a building engineer I used to modify air returns to be placed over large industrial copiers in order to eliminate hot spots without freezing out the rest of the A/C zone.

In a moderate climate, you could keep your farm in the attic during winter and move it to the basement in the summer.

I live in Houston. We have hot days and then we have hot days. Cold to us is when the temperature drops below 60. :D

We don't get snow. Snow in Houstonian speak is actually what most people refer to as frozen dew. :)

Ten will be a ways off at this point as I won't be adding the nodes as fast as I did before. The specs on the four are: Biostar M7VKQ Pro/256MB Ram-El Cheapo Value Ram/AMD 2400+ Thoro Core running @ 2.04GHz/Various 2GB or so Hard Drives/WinXP Pro with all the eye candy turned off and optimized for performance/Coolermaster aluminum hsf with quiet fans/Allied 300W el cheapo power supplies. One node has 512MB ram but that's the only part that provide any performance difference among any of them. The specs of future nodes will be the same. They are dirt cheap and effective unless I can dig up a special one-off deal.

We have hot, damned hot, and damned hot days with 120% relative humidity. I've seen snow on tv before. Maybe once or twice on the ground here.

4 nodes, each running 2.04GHz. Ok, so ya got me beat by a mile ATM. 8.16GHz is a good bit of AXP power. What all else do you have folding? You come close to doubling my production.

I have 7.1GHz of AXP power (4.6GHz TBred, 2.5GHz Barton)
    2.13GHz p4
800MHz Athlon (core set to 85%)
    850MHz Athlon
I have a Duron running, but I'm not positive of its speed. I think it's 600MHz.

The farm is 8.16GHz, a 2800+ on my game box, 2200+ on another box at home, wife's 2100+, laptop has 2.4 P4, friend's 2.4 P4, another friend's 1.1 celeron, another friend's 1.1 duron, and another friend's 1.0 celeron laptop. The friend with the 1.0 celeron laptop said he needed to drop off his home computer because he had spyware problems with it too. Consider it added too, not sure when he'll have it here though.
