I grabbed the download version and installed it this morning. Had a couple minor setbacks, but found workarounds.

It seems that there is a problem on the 1st install CD. You cannot boot from it. But it was easy enough to make a boot floppy.

The second problem that I ran into was that it didn't like installing with my CDRW drive attached. (It is a SCSI drive connected to an Adaptec 2940U) Once I pulled the power plug on the drive and then everything installed just fine. Once it was installed, I hooked the power cable back up, Linux detected the drive, installed the drivers, and all was well...

All in all, I am fairly pleased with the snappiness of the OS.... Seems more responsive than 9.2 did. :)

Haven't really had a chance to check out all the new bells and whistles of the updated kernel and KDE and/or Gnome. But so far, I like it.

(One other odd thing I have run into is that for some reason I am only getting sound from my right channel on my GTXP. Going to have to look into that... Works fine on WindowsXP (dual boot) so it must be a Linux issue...)

Fastest ftp site for it I know of is ftp://ftp.uninett.no/ and next fastest is ftp://ftp.sunet.se/ . In the US, ftp://carroll.aset.psu.edu got hit so hard I could not get connected during the day, they had to limit simultaneous anonymous connects to 25 simultaneous anonymous ftp connects during daytime US time. at night, they let 75 anonymous ftp folks grab stuff and are very fast.

Mandrake 10 Community is now in /pub/Linux/../Mandrake/iso on most public mirrors. This is no longer a pure beta or rc, but it is NOT Official 10 yet-- Offical 10 will have more software now being added in for the paid versions plus the ubiquitous and inevitable bug and security patches that get added on the fly. What you get are the first three CDs of what will be the powerpack, as this is now the STABLE branch. It DOES have a 2.6 kernel in it (AFAIK, 2.6.3 or possibly a 2.6.pre4 variant). Will not know exactly which comes in isos til this weekend, when I burn and try it here-- have heard both from reliable parties.

Fair warning, if what you are offered has rc1 in it, your favorite mirror has not gotten the latest stable isos. You want the files without rc1 in name. There was no rc2 propagated to public mirrors, it was final tweak test before community. The actual propagation started March 4, and the main Mandrake site was transfrerring at dialup rates, the demand was so intense. So, mirrors were uploading from ftp://mandrake.contactel.cz/ for 3-5 days to sync the new files to primary mirrors (the ones given above are the primary dist route for Community, they are high capacity mirrors). Basically, the ftp page for public mirrors went up on the 16th, things were too busy for me to get decent figured for you on what mirrors could handle load best, until yestgerday, when I went to five mirrors to bench rates.
