Problem with booting.

edited March 2004 in Science & Tech
Ok when i go to boot up it will ask me which OS i want too boot into windows XP or windows 2000 Pro. Well i don't have windows XP on the system so how do i get rid of the prompt?

It's probably not cleared out of the boot sector.

Right click on "My Computer" and choose properties, in system properties choose advanced and click on startup in there you'll see "default OS" hit the drop down tab and click on windows XP then delete it.
    That should solve your problem.

hmmmm....did you highlight it and hit the del key?

Forget that, click on edit the startup options manually and delete it there.
It will open a wordpad document and you just delete windows XP there.

Dang, I'm trying to remember from my 2k install but I'm drawing a blank.
I'm using XP now and that option is in there...hopefully Thrax might be able to help you on this when he sees it.

The file that you want to edit is "boot.ini" in the root of the boot drive. The file can be edited with notepad. This file may have a read only attribute set so you will need to clear the read only attribute if that is the case. Additionally, it may not show up in the explorer view because it may have a hidden attribute as well. Start->Run->"notepad c:\boot.ini" should get you started.

Once you open the file just delete the line that contains the reference to Windows XP ONLY and save.
