Running multiple instances of MSN and AIM?

edited March 2004 in Science & Tech
Whats up fellas? I've been trying to figure out a solution to this problem and one hasn't arisen yet. I need to have 2 instances of AIM and MSN running at the same time. 1 AIM/MSN for business and 1 AIM/MSN for personal. My plan was to use Trillian Pro 2.0 for the business aspect and the AimMutation and MSN for personal. The only problem is whenever I have AIM/MSN, and Trillian open at the same time Trillian automatically merges my contacts from AIM and MSN. I don't want any of my personal contacts on the business aspect to keep things organized. So, I guess my question is can I have 2 "AIM's" and 2 "MSN's" running at the same time? Or can I turn off Trillian's automatic merge contact feature? I also have Trillian Pro 1.0, not sure if that has the option. I would look around on Trillian but my PC is at school. Any ideas are very welcome. Thanks much-DaK

Try Miranda IM. It has plug-ins for ICQ, MSN, AIM, etc. I have only used ICQ and MSN. It works great, just that the MSN plug-in has trouble receiving files.
If you don't need to receive files from one set of MSN contacts, Miranda IM would be good.

That merged all my contacts too. Can I turn the merging off?

What do you mean by merged?
Say you load up your business MSN and your business AIM on Miranda and contacts get mixed together?

Well, if it is, sort them. Uninstall/remove Miranda and sort from scratch. Load up MSN first and sort your MSN contacts to one group. The sign out of MSN and log into AIM. Sort your AIM contacts to another group. Then when you load AIM and MSN together, all your contacts would be sort to its on groups, MSN and AIM. From there, you can sort it even more.

If you want a screenshot of my Miranda setup, I will be willing to post it up.

I guess I want to start the business one from scratch. No contacts whatsoever except people that I need to get in touch with. Everytime I delete contacts one by one that are automatically merged from my personal accounts, they're automatically "re-merged" as soon as I close/open Miranda or Trillian again.

This is what was happening to me at school. I would install a fresh copy of Trillian 2.0, no contacts whatsoever. I used my business addresses/names for it.

I would then precede to open my personal Aim and MSN accounts and all of my contacts would be automatically merged into my clean install of Trillian. It's really quite annoying :). Miranda just did the same thing.

If you know any way around this I'd appreciate it. Thanks for checking back.

    Erm...ok.
Then make 4 groups. MSN personal, AIM personal, MSN business, AIM business. Sign in to each account separately and sort the contacts into their respective groups. If that doesn't work, then try installing two copies of Miranda or Trillian. Have one installation for business contacts and the other installation for personal contacts but I'm sure if you can run two instances of Miranda or Trillian. Try making 4 groups first and sort out your contacts before trying to install two copies of Miranda or Trillian.

When you create a new connectionin Triliian, you can select for it to create a new group and use that group. It's in the "Advance" tab when you create a connection.

I'm not sure I know what you mean. I'll have to take a look when I get back to school. Thanks.

That looks ideal. Do you mind posting a screenshot of how you got to that screen? I need to get the new patch for it though, some of my messages don't get through.
