Cpu Prob?

edited March 2004 in Hardware
ok i just got an amd 64. it got built and loaded everything up. all was well for about 2 days. then one day i went to go turn my computer on and would stick at the xp logo screen and would not boot into windows-at all.so the i reformatted thinking it would solve the problem- it didnt. everything went great until i got where everything is done installing and you get to the setup screen- i clicked next and it froze up. so i restarted and it just stayed at the black screen only thing i saw was my cursor. so i ran memtest- wouldnt even run memtest! tried this on both sticks still would not run. so i put in my old memory it wouldnt even run that! so i called gnome for help and said it might be the cpu. i wanna get some other opinions in though. :confused2

What kind of PSU have you got? Try checking the voltages on it as windows is doing it's thing and see if at some point one drops pretty low.
All it takes is one split second to screw you up.
I'm pretty loathe to say the CPU is the culprit, if it was it'd generally just not work, I think you've got a peripheral that's failing...it could be an add in card like a modem or other pci card or the PSU.

If you have a multimeter you should check the voltages under load as well.

try resetting the bios. maybe something could have messed it up. (could be)

i dunno about the cpu. cause if the PC will install windows, then how could it be the CPU? dont think so.

try taking all the PCI cards out of the mobo. and then try it. maybe one of them went screwy.

i dunno. im out of ideas. it may be the mobo. but i doubt it.

these are one of those problems that are hard to troubleshoot.

Check the mobo manufacturer site for approved memory and try fail safe defaults in BIOS. I know that certain types of memory can be cranky. Are the old and new sticks you have different manufacturers of memory?
