Dying Monitor?

Specs:

NEC MultiSync FE991sb
ATi Radeon 9000 64MB
Abit NF7-s 2.0
CAT 4.2 (perhaps an issue; this might be an old wives tale)
Latest NEC MultiSyncFE991sb drivers (off windows update)
Latest DirectX

I get this annoying buzzing sound coming out of the back of my monitor. At first I thought it was my speakers (poor wiring). Upon close examination I realized it was coming from the monitor.

Turned off the monitor sound goes away. Turn it back on and there it is again. Lowered refresh rate from 85Hz to 75 Hz still getting noise. Lowered it to 60Hz still getting noise. Changed resolution to 640x480 still getting noise. Lowered the color quality from 32 bit to 16 bit, nothing. Restarted, nothing. Degaussed, nothing.

Time to check and see if I've still got a warranty on this sucka. You guys think it's dying?

its possible the monitor, or at least one of its components, are dying or are very unhappy. if you feel comfortable with electricity and gigantic safety hazards, try using a bunch of compressed air on everything inside

Sounds like the flyback transformer is loose. If you have the right knowlege and saftey equipment, you could tighten the screws that are holding it to the PCB.

Buzzing stopped. I didn't do anything to stop it, oh well. I think it's done this in the past (maybe it was the speakers). I'm just gonna check up and make sure my warranty is intact and hope the problem doesn't persist. Thanks Baron, SMJ

And look for 'dry joints'. Any soldered connections, especially around transformers, that are discoloured. Usually a tickle with a soldering iron will remake the joint. There are some very high voltages in there even when off and unplugged so if in doubt take it to a repair shop.

edit, while posting this you posted it had stopped. Somethings loose by the sound of it. It will do it again and may fail.

Well the monitor is still under warranty.

3 Years Manufacturer Limited warranty pts and labor. It's been about a year since I bought it. So i'm just gonna not worry about it and if it dies, I'll upgrade to something that does 1600x1200 @ 85hz and use give the rma one to my dad for his CAD work.

This is getting truly annoying. It keeps going in and out of focus, as if someone is rotating the coarse adjustment knob on a microscope. RMA time. Anyone have any ideas what the problem may be?

Power circuitry, flyback, or a "hunting" gun.... OR, too high a refresh rate, that is just marginally too high but not enough to completely cause it to distort. If you have speakers close to it, and when speakers are making sounds (especially a larger magnet BASS speaker), you might also be getting field interference from speakers that is varying depending on how active magnets in speakers are. Put a speaker close outside monitor to where a flyback transformer is located inside monitor case, and you will get an effect like a bad flyback transformer.

My cell phone interferes with my moniter and speakers. Screen flickers, speakers kinda buzz/beep. It's wierd. Maybe if you have a phone or anything like that around you might want to move it. Probably late, but i'm new.
